"Spy" shots and that.

They already do leccy off-roaders, so this is actually pretty plausible.

Looks like it might even have gears and conventional controls rather than scootay style everything-on-the-bars.

On the downside, they've retained all the parts that go wrong with the mini-Dukes. Thumbs Down

Looking at the pic, it's clear there's an engine in that bike.

The only things that look odd are the casing is different, it's using a different frame / subframe (and it does look twisted) and the large box of milk tray gaffa taped to the RHS.

I'mma say it be bull.

You mean like the electrics?

Looks internal combustion to me in the photo although not standard Duke so might not be. I like the idea though. The Freeride is a fun bike. Just a shame leccy bikes are so expensive as they could be good fun.

I think he means the engine. At least I'd hope he does. Because that's the main issue.

Not only does it have a large radiator on the right hand side, suggesting that KTM is using a liquid-cooled motor and perhaps also cooling the batteries with water

Water cooled batteries Shocked

The only liquid cooled batteries I have worked with were huge bastard things on a ship that were used as storage/buffer for a turbo electric ship. They were immense and the circuits horrendously complicated.

I presume they are much more simple in this case?

Near silent motorcycles??? What could possibly go wrong. Laughing

In my mind it's a bit like alcohol free beer. Smells like beer, looks like beer, tastes like not beer. The noise of bikes is totally
part of the experience IMO.

Typically have a network of cooling pipes in the casing of the batteries, it's (presumably) on the same pump circuit as the motor's cooling pipes. High discharge and charge rates means the cells in the batteries get toasty, and with Lithium baed cells, that means runaway and Kaboom. There's nothing more complicated than your standard cooling loop in your current bike.

You're right. We should totally ditch that idea. Too soon?

From what I've heard/read cooling's one of the major (performance) issues to overcome with electric bikes.

They'd need a sound system to blast out synthesised engine noise, like you get in some cars.

But they blast in rather be than out; the noise is for the end user not the environment they're operated in. But yes, making a noise will no doubt be considered an engineering feature.

'leccy motors typically used in a vehicle application have a monster of a whine, deffo not silent. Even in leccy cars with all the sound-deadening etc, you can still clearly hear it.

It will take the public time to get used to the different noise, no doubt,

Well I thought BCF logic dictated sound only travels backwards, so no one can hear you coming from behind anyway. Fake exhaust with speakers?

Had a few Prius' (hellkat trying to run me down) sneak up on me whilst cycling, I know they make some noise but we had a couple of electric vans at work, and people were forever stepping out in front of you (well more than 'normal' for pedestrians in London).

I suspect any leccy motor used in a bike will make a lot more noise than a Prius. If you get the chance, listen to a Tesla giving it some stick. I'd suspect given the power/weight requirements of competing with IC engined bikes, it's going to be lot more like that, a Prius is interested in efficiency, not performance.

TT Zero, just tyre and wind noise and a slight whine, at full chat.
You can't hear the bikes until they're 15m away!

You can here the proper bikes miles away, literally!
