PostPosted: 20:19 - 03 May 2017    Post subject: model airbrush kit help? Reply with quote

a fair while ago i purchased a model airbrush kit and compressor..

today i decided to go grab some paint and thinners and have a practice on shit

mixed acrylic and thinners at 2:1 put into the pot and had a go but it was sporadic and hardly anything came out had major issues..

changed pot to a gravity fed pot and still the same if not worse..

went 3:1 thinning and no change
tried a different needle as it had an extra in the box but no change still.

eventually thinned it mega loads to get the same as before.

tried loads of air and tried hardly any air but still not a consistent spray thats usable, it doesnt work more often that it does.

any help on how to start?

Is the airbrush dual action or single?

Single action is where you press down and the air and paint both flow at once,

Dual action is where you press down to start airflow and pull back (while pushing down) to get paint to flow.

Setting up the air pressure is a big part of getting things right, or so I recall. I was using ink last time I was airbrushing so can't comment on paint thinning.

Not having bought either since the last time I was learning to use an airbrush (nearly 40 years ago) things may have changed, but ink was considered the ideal medium for learning, as you got more for your money and it's water soluble and it's much easier to clean when you're finished.

And there's the clue - I think Tamiya water soluble acrylics used to recommend up to 50:50 thinning for spraying.

Get the paint mix right so it consistently flows, then play around with the pressure until it doesn't bounce off the surface you're painting.

A single action brush is much easier to learn with (and much cheaper) as there are less variables.

Revell used to do a really cheap single action, perfect for the novice to play around with paint mixing and technique.

You want to get the mix to roughly the same consistency as milk

Do you get air coming out the tip when you run it without paint?

It's all trial and error really, there's Alot of variables to work out, but once you get there it will click eventually.

Make sure your needle is always clean.

Make sure your paint is good enough for airbrushes, there are some specific airbrush paints like the Vallejo line. Use thinners rather than water, as it doesn't dry so quickly and clog the nozzle and needle.

Did you disassemble & inspect it before you started to make sure it was all as it should be?

Put some water in it & check your spray pattern on a piece of paper, I usually use about 15-20 psi with my Iwata airbrush.

If it sprays nicely with water you need thinner paint/higher pressure.

Getting pol to take anything apart will only ensure it will never work as it should.

Hiya

What thinners are you using? Just checking you are not using one intended for enamels.

Which acrylic paints are you using? I find the Tamiya ones work best (for me) in the airbrush (although I find them useless with a paint brush). Acrylics do tend to dry quickly and clog up the airbrush rapidly. It is worth stripping the very thoroughly cleaning the airbrush on a regular basis.

Al the best

Katy

Try it with nothing but water next.

If it works ok with water it means you're fucking up the paint mix.

One has to assume you're cleaning it after you've tried to run it with paint, otherwise it would still be blocked when you try it with only air (presumably with the paint-cup attached?). Does the paint-cup have a lid? Edit, I see from the pic it does. Run it with the lid OFF.

What are you finding when you clean it? How are you cleaning it?
