Years ago, I remember seeing a mechanic listening to an engine using a large screwdriver as a stethoscope, trying to locate the source of an engine noise. I am told that for about £20, you can buy a mechanical stethoscope designed for the job. My question is, has anyone done this, or used a mechanical stethoscope, and actually gained useful information as a result?

The chap I used to take my bike to back in Oxfordshire used a screwdriver this way to check whether my valve clearances would need further inspection. He said he reckoned one was just getting a little on the tight side, but nothing to worry about yet. I have known other mechanics do this in the past too. This was a guy whose mechanical knowledge I hold in very high regard.

Going to boil your pee for talking about cars in bike section Laughing but I once knew a guy that worked on old turbocharged 80's performance engines that had a penchant for big end bearings and he'd use a screwdriver end to diagnose not only early failure of the bearings but which bloody pot it'd be on. Fine tuned ear that man.

It's probably best just to get yourself a stethoscope. My local classic bike builder uses one so I reckon that it's likely to be a better method than a screwdriver. What do they cost anyway - £20??
