Like most of us I'm sure, every once in a while look at the classifieds and consider, speculate and theorise. Things seem especially crazy at the moment. take these two for example:

Ducati 999s 2005 9k miles £8.5k
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Ducati-999S-Monposto-sports-motorcycle-fully-loaded-Termis-carbon-fibre-/162475564008?hash=item25d44c5be8:g:IiIAAOSww3tY8gdy

But for £1k more money you can have something 10 years newer, less miles and better in every measurable way, like this

Ducati 899 2014 4k miles £9.5k
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2014-Ducati-899-Panigale-Immaculate-4000-miles-only-/302278827839?hash=item466138df3f:g:KEwAAOSwls5Y6zoX

It doesn't add up, its almost like whilst trying to type boobless into a calculator they went wrong somewhere and used that figure.

I appreciate I've picked the most expensive 999s to prove a point but even if you pick a cheaper one then the maths still doesn't add up.

It's got the next three years of appreciation built into the selling price.

I looked at Blackbirds on eBay last night, a lot of '98 and '99 models were going for nearly £3k. I mean like wtf, I'll never be able to satisfy a teenage dream as there's no way I'm paying those prices! In winter a Blackbird could be had for £1.5, I know the 'season' ups the prices but fook me! Shocked

Although I agree that asking prices are sometimes ridiculous, the 999 you've highlighted is the 's' variant, with all the trinkets. (Ohlins etc.)

Plus, the divisive (at the time) styling seems to have grown on people and I think people are buying them instead of 996's now.

Anyway, as you were Mad

You think that's silly - have a look on MCN or autotrader at Yamaha XV250s. 15-20 years old, an odd engine size (can't ride on L plates, most full licence holders would go for at least the 535 or a proper cruiser if that's your thing). Current asking prices been £2k and £2.5k.

We gave about £850 for ours (10k miles, pristine condition) a couple of years ago, which was only marginally below the going rate.

Asking, not going for.

BCF, will you please, just for once, search for sold listings and see what (if anything) people are actually bidding.

I don't disagree, but asking prices do seem to be going on the silly side, especially for older bikes.

The 899 looks like a scorched dogshit. The 999 looks amazing. Pride in ownership innit.

As mentioned previously. I'd guess the 999S is rarer and is being sold by a Ducati dealer in London (The Sarf East).
Is the seller of the 889 up norf a Ducati dealer?
Rarity and condition seem to be driving factors with Ducatis.

I'm all cured of this crazy price shite,
I've bought a couple or three scabby old donkeys and it will be a very very long time before I even think about buying another bike Laughing
