Ducati, in their wisdom, decided to attach the side stand on the 1100 Multistrada to the bottom of the crankcase. During normal use the bolts (which are steel) work loose. They bend and get pulled out and destroy the thread in the crank, so we have used Time Certs. However, the stand still works loose.

At the weekend I discovered that the stand is fixed very firmly when the engine is cold, but is loose when hot!!! It seems that the three metals (crank, bolts and Time Cert) are expanding at different rates when the bike is hot and makes the stand unusable.

Anyone got any thoughts on how to solve this (I'm NOT selling the bike!!!)? What would happen if we re-tapped the holes in the crank when it was hot? Would this mean that the bolts would stay tight when hot (and hold the stand in place), and get even tighter when cold?

Thanks.

Matt

Shocked Oh pictures please. That sounds like one of Ducatis more moronic ideas, and they have had a few. Laughing

Disclaimer: It worked for me but may not work for you.

The ST2 also has the sidestand attached to the engine...oh..and the swingarm pivots on the engine..no problem.

I noticed the bolts loosening so following the service manual used a bit of brake n clutch cleaner then applied low strength loctite 222 and nipped them up (not tight...*I suspect about 18-10Nm ).

[edit] 24Nm for my bike

They've been doing this since about 1989.

Both points see above.

Jaffa90 - The MTS has a single swing arm, so this won't fit. There is no frame there either as the engine hangs from the trellis..Thanks for the suggestion though.

Howling Terror - I tried that the first time I noticed the problem and it didn't work for me - I'm glad it solved your problem.

Sick Pup - They may have been doing this since 1989, and it's still a crappy design.

It's like the Ducati engineers had to design the stand fixing in an hour on a Friday afternoon before a bank holiday.. Say in your best Italian accent.. "This will do, it looks good, lets hope that they don't try to use it." Oh, actually, that sums up all Ducati engineering, not just the stand.....

I believe so, but still there's more than one strength.

I'd probably try titanium alloy bolts next, retapped to the correct size for the thread, also drilled and lockwired (belt & braces). The inserts are probably not helping. I doubt it's weldable, probably steel to aluminium.

I bet that makes refueling fun Laughing

I hear loads of little silly things like this from ducati owners, not even the old bikes, mostly new ones (past 5-10 years). Just little oversights I guess. (Little from ducatis point of view, not little when it is your problem I imagine.)

Could you not just do what them there TT racers do and safety wire it?

I could imagine thread lock would not be that useful if it is comming loose with heat, so a split pin or safety wire would be a cheap and easyish fix.

Old Thread Alert!

The last post was made 8 years, 272 days ago. Instead of replying here, would creating a new thread be more useful?
