Hi guys i need to upgrade my machine, its now 4 years old and Premier Pro is killing it. If you had 4k to spend what would you build and who would you buy it from. A lot of money but I need something for editing 4k / 5.2k video without having to make proxies all the time. Needs to be a full tower with up to 7 sata drives for storage.

This is not for gaming, wish i had the time for that its for video / photo.

Don't skimp on graphics card, Premiere 2020 finally makes good use of it when rendering.

Watch some Linus tech tips videos, they are always banging on about video workstations.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EXBGRxmLqOU

Was the last full build I think, it's 4 months old, so speccing in the 3070 or 3060 would be obvious.

Maybe look at server/workstation motherboards? Haven't done video editing for a while but is 64GB gonna be enough for >4K?

Memory isn't usually what slows them down but it will depend on how may layers or whatever, some things like diffusion effects really hammer it. 64GB is ample with good graphics card doing the donkey work with any applied effects

The struggle was real!

Would suggest a 3080, but don't buy a non-nvidia one, crashing is unreal currently, rolled back to a 2080 Super.

OP I would not run that all in one water cooler with that threadripper, I would not consider it.

Thermal paste isn't needed, its pre-applied on most of the coolers, helpful as a back up though.

For video, those disks are alright, you can get faster storage at the cost of more heat.

3000Mhz RAM with a Ryzen is retarded, go minimum 3600Mhz base, otherwise you might as well not have a Ryzen. Also try to just get stupidly fast RAM, your board is capable of 4600Mhz, it doesn't even list support for 3000Mhz Laughing

PSU is a bit beefy, but futureproof!

Basically, I would change the RAM and the cooler, you are running too slow and going to get VERY warm in there.

I would consider M2 disks and a PCIe expansion for 4 of them and might be worth getting some sensible cooling for it.

Worth considering ambient temperature. All the cooling in the world is no use if the room heats up. Scotland though so probably not a problem Wink

Bottom/Front in & Top/Rear out airflow is always good. Ideally a slight positive pressure unless the case is perfectly sealed in which case go for neutral pressure.

According to the specs the DIMM.2 expansion slot runs slightly faster than the under-board slots. There's a lot going on with that motherboard Smile

Thanks guys so if i change to faster RAM what cooling would you recommend? If specific models that would be fantastic.

I appreciate the help.

Personally, I like these - https://www.amazon.co.uk/Crucial-Ballistix-BL2K8G36C16U4B-Desktop-Gaming/dp/B083V93HJG/ref=sr_1_3?dchild=1&keywords=3600mhz%2Bddr4&qid=1601503892&sr=8-3&th=1

But you are gonna pay serious money for 3600Mhz+ variants.

Cooler wise, Ryujin ROG cooler would bbe good, otherwise you are goinng to want something massive.

https://www.overclockers.co.uk/asus-rog-ryujin-performance-aio-cpu-liquid-cooler-with-oled-display-360mm-hs-04p-as.html?gclid=CjwKCAjw2dD7BRASEiwAWCtCbyYOOLdkGOW3wzv65J5tc2BvcvDjkDQdAkpZ_q7fZd1OPGBrvxi1yhoCl94QAvD_BwE

Again ROG, they do a Strix 360mm, but I cant see a TR4 socket one in stock.

Just make sure a 360mm rad with a bit of leeway will fit nicely at the top of your case. Want to make sure there is ventilation at the top, looks to be ample room, but your motherboard shroud over the IO might be an issue, might not! You can front mount the radiator, but you have next to zero intake gap there.

I've got full on water so its very different, but I've never had a PC run so cool Laughing

I wouldnt bother with the 3080 unless you really need that much grunt.
The bang for buck sweetspot is the 3070.

But if you are buying a seriously pricey PC with 256GB RAM and a Threadripper... why skimp on the GPU? Wink Just means it will handle anything, rather than get upset later on in life. The wait is annoying and the failure rate of the 3080 right now with aftermarket vendors is horrific Neutral

Apparently not.
even the 3070 is on par with the top of the range 2x series

but the new AMD GPUs are coming.

I wouldn't say it was 'skimping'.
The price difference between the 3070 and the 3080 isn't worth it for the extra power. 50% more cost for what 10 % more grunt?
Besides, he is video editing which is more reliant on vram than on the 3d capabilities. Buying a 3080 over a 3070 would pretty much just be an extravagance.
I'd have put that extra money into optane and actually get a real world benefit.
