Dear BCF, in your infinite wisdom...

Have had a dog for 7-8 months, she's great, 18 month old Chorkie girl, a bit shy of people and other dogs but gets on great with both after a little while.

We've been struggling to find another for quiet a while so ended up pulling the trigger when we found an add on gum tree, staff pup (3 months old), advert had been live for 20 minutes, pup has to go asap.

We've been trying to arrange introducing the new dog over the course of a week or two (maybe why we've not had much luck), starting with exchanging blankets etc etc etc.

As that's not an option, how can we maximise the chances of successful integration?

Current dog has free run of the kitchen/dining room and flap out to the garden.

Plan is to take current doggo down with us, take them for a walk and drive them home together after. Not sure where to go after this?

Planning to put pup into a crate for a day or two but only when we are not around (overnight) and having the two out and about whilst we are there. We are expecting some jealousy from current doggo, any tips on managing this?

I realise we have not prepared very well as we were expecting a few days to figure it out Embarassed

Thoughts would be much appreciated.

You're wanting to get 3 month old staff pup from gumtree and the dog you've currently got hasn't be socialised properly?

Do not get the staff pup.

Do you know why your Chorkie needed rehoming or why the Staff pup needs rehoming?

^^^ +1

Staffy will be fine, Chorkie will be a spoilt princess and the cause of all the trouble.

Do not buy Staffy (even though they are awesome).

Also Ste not for mod because he took 2 posts not one.

Staffie is young and probably from a pikey but still young...

Chorkie got rehomed from a house with 3 kids, 3 dogs and several cats. Generally a house full of crazy. I'm happy she gets along well enough once introduced to other dogs but suspect she has probably been mistreated by the kids at some point. Is generally okay with adults, takes longer to get happy around kids.

The staffie, alleged moving for new job forces sale. Have spent plenty of time around juvenile/adult Staffies, just never taken one in...

The Staff pup is only young but it can't unlearn whatever it is that's happened in the four weeks it's been with its owners.

If it was from anyone even slightly reputable then they wouldn't be flogging it on gumtree.

Do not get the Staff pup.

Are you sure you're not overthinking this (swapping blankets etc?) ? I might be be more concerned if you were introducing a new Chorkie puppy to a resident adult Staffie.

Just bring the new one home, use your nows, play it by ear and don't leave them together unattended until you're happy they're OK. Continual praising and reassurance of the incumbent is good; try not to let family and visitors make a big fuss of the newbie in front of her, and if that happens, then you do likewise with her.

(when we brought home our second dog there was much wagging, licking and bouncing and that was about it)

If it doesn't work out I doubt you'll have trouble finding another home. I'd have a Staffie, they're very misunderstood dogs (mainly cos they're often owned by wannabe gangsta idiots).

Cheers for the advice Freddy, reassuring. I'm a software nerd, I overthink everything to the n'th degree Laughing
I'm sure we'll be able to find another home easily if it doesn't workout due to her age but it's shocking how many staffies there are out there :-/.
We know a few out on our local rounds and our chorkie gets on well with them. Part of me is hoping our chorkie dominates the staffie, would make an amusing pair if the little one held dominance Mr. Green

Sure, a dog is for trying out, not for life.

Rescue centres are overflowing with Staffies.

You literally can't give them away.

You've got a tiny, insecure, yappity piece of crap that you haven't fully socialised.

And you want to add in the breed that keeps vets in business stitching up animals have have been mauled by "he's soppy really" Grip and "she wouldn't hurt a fly" Fang?

Do not get the Staff pup.

Again that's down to the owners, they're mistreated and often abandoned cos they're not 'hard' enough. I guess my point was due to the breeds popularity you won't have trouble getting rid of a young staffie, to what type of person would be the question.

You will have trouble rehoming if you care about where it goes.

As Roger says, rescue centres are full of Staffies. Take a look at gumtree and there's loads of Staffies which need rehoming that apparently are all completely problem free.

I would like to believe that at least some of the sob stories about the rehoming being necessary because of family stuff / work related stuff / new landlord related stuff are true but the problem there is anyone who cares about where their beloved family pet is going wouldn't be flogging it on gumtree.

Further to that, if they'd got the puppy from a reputable breeder then if the sob story was true then they could return it to the breeder at any time in the dogs life. Responsible breeders and owners do not want their dogs to ever end up with someone who thinks that they'll be able to find another home easily if it doesn't workout.

Are the current owners wanting to do house visits to vet potential owners? Have you seen the contracts you'll need to sign or is it a case of first to show up with the cash gets the dog?

If the Staffie goes for your Chorkie, how would you separate them?

Do not get Staff Puppy

Better still, don't buy a dog from gum tree, Unless, by miracle they are one of the rare reputable breeders on there.

Staffs, largely misunderstood and stigmatised due to the cretins that generally raise them, which coincidentally are likely to be the ones that are breeding and selling on gum tree.

If you want a second dog, re-home one from a rescue centre... It you are married to the idea of a puppy, be patient and wait for puppies to become available at a rescue centre, which, in the case of staffies, will happen sooner rather than later.

Excuse me while I get down of my hobby horse

If the place you get the new dog from isn't a shit hole, I'll eat my own dog's shit even though it looks suspiciously like a Mars bar.

I guess OP's on his way. Bright side, he'll very likely offer Ripper a better home and future than it currently has.

Would you have one though? I wouldn't rehome a staffie unless it was very very young, whilst they aren't naturally aggressive dogs they can be quite easily wound up, and it's not difficult to turn them into nasty dogs (hence their bad reputation).

Anyway can we see a video of the first meeting? Wub

Don't perpetuate the myth of Staffies being violent, they're adorable soppy fuckers.
