Took a test ride on an Africa Twin today and I have to say that I may be tempted to enter the adventure bike world.
Only issue is that would it be like driving a Chelsea tractor as the actual chances of going off road would be minimal in all probability, or even worse looking like the arsehole that he is, Charley Boorman.
My head (and ageing body) tells me it is right but still very much undecided.
Your thoughts are appreciated.

Whistle

I assume/hope they've sorted that. I mean, really sorted it, not CBF125 sorted it.

That's about it. A batch of the early ones had fluxxy spokes, like, Victor Devine fluxxing from new. The usual "that's owner abuse, that is, besides they all do that, and it's not doing that," from dealers, then Honda decided they'd better sort it out.

I take it yours has been OK?

The original Africa Twin was an iconic bike.

This one is an insult to the name, it's pure marketing.

I wouldn't get a DCT personally. Read a couple of false neutral horror stories.

I get your point but to me that is purely a reuse of the name rather than trying to cash in on the reputation of the original, which in Triumphs case was pretty crap.

The only thing the same with the Trophy is the name. It's more a progression using the same name as Ford did with the Cortina Mk 1-V. You showed Mk1 Trophy, below is Mk2 and mine is Mk3

https://tse2.mm.bing.net/th?id=OIP.CEL_N3gjxce-WazWv1vqXQEsDS&w=294&h=202&c=7&qlt=90&o=4&pid=1.7

The new Africa Twin is much more trying to be the original and failing in my eyes.

Is it a bad bike though?

VD review is less than fawning but generally postive. They even rate it offroad.

I had two of the old AT's and loved them, but thought that they needed an up date. The varadero wasn't it although I have one. The new AT is what they should have done 10 years ago. I would love one but I would also like the Crosstourer too.

It isn't going to be a bad bike, it's a Honda. Whether it's seen as a convincing successor to the old Africa Twin I suppose it depends what it is capable of. Is it a real capable off roader or is it more a large adventure bike (read tourer with rough track capabilities) a la BMW, Yamaha Tenere or the like.

I just feel that if someone who had the original Africa Twin bought this, there is a good chance they are going to be disappointed but that is just my opinion.

Honda have been pretty aggressive in saying and showing that it really is gripped and sorted and can go anywhere.

Real world, I wonder if anyone will ever find out.

I doubt that there's a big market for people willing to spend £13K (after options) on a 260kg (after ruggedising) bike and then do this with it:

I agree with Fazer ( Brick Wall ) but with the added advantage that I've had a similar bike (Super Tenere) and I have to say that it is one of my most favourite of the bikes I've owned (after the GSX750 and the GPZ500).

I banged around London on it for a couple of years, it was fine in town and out on the motorway it gave pretty good head as well - but I'm not exactly the off roading type. Didn't bother me one bit.

Don't worry about looking a tit on an Africa Twin,it ain't nothing compared to that lot.

The Black Widows are iconic as well Cool

How about a V-Strom as an alternative if you've no plans to offroad. Don't need wire wheels and tubed tyres. I remember when alloy wheels on bikes were the expensive option. Now it's shitty wire spoked wheels and tubed tyres.

Back to the V-Strom - great engine, suspension, brakes and handling. Comfortable, for rider and passenger and can carry luggage. Would bet that the alloy wheeled V-Strom is way cheaper than the Honda.
Had mine for a couple of months now and well impressed. Takes a lot to impress me!!

Have they fixed the 'random stalling in traffic at low speed' issue on the V-Strom?
