I'm sorry, but this whole thing appears to be turned into some media led propaganda stunt to blame NHS under funding.

Aye, when we first got wind of something going on, trying to determine actual fact from the media "OMGWTFCYBERZ" shitstorm that was being tweeted, retweeted, picked up by newspapers and reported as fact just buried anything useful.

Then all the IT "experts" wheeled out for their inane opinions just for their 10 seconds of fame and muddied the water even further. Wankaz.

Any percentage quoted isn't as high as it seems and yet is accurate.

A lot of specialist machinery will still be running on older versions of windows than XP but won't be internet facing.

I have personally seen various sample analysers that still run embedded versions of XP, 98, 95 even 3.1 etc but the manufacturers have never supplied updated software as it wasn't needed. Same applies to a lot of CNC software running machines.

If you seperate the internet enabled from the internet disabled and even non-networked computers it would seem a bit different.

Whether an aging OS is used or not, the simple solution involves backups and redundancy.

You should have everything on your computer backed up properly so that if you wake up tomorrow and your computer is slightly deaded then oh well, click the format button and just carry on. It would be a slightl inconvenience rather than oh fuck I've lost all my files.

I haven't seen anywhere that this affects home PCs is that right.
If so why not.
It wouldn't bother me I run of external HDD and have full backups
a few times including OS so two minutes and back up and fine.Smile

Edit: As it happens I phoned my doctor to print out my file on Thursday
to have them sent to a doctor closer to where I live.

Ransomware affects home PCs. There's loads and loads of ransomware malware that can be found in spam email attachments or you can download some from dodgy torrent sites and many other types of dodgy sites.

If you have everything important backed up then you can never be held to ransom.

The more important something is, the more layers of backup and redundancy you have.

It is going for every one, it's just easier to spread once in a large internal network.

So panic, destroy all IT equipment.

Actually only (personally) seen one ransom type thingy; a woman I know had it happen, they also used her webcam to take a picture of her. I found it pretty funny Laughing

For the first time ever I entirely agree with Microsoft.

The bigger issue though is the way organisations treat IT as a cost centre to be kept to a minimum and ignore the expert opinions of IT professionals.

It was a while ago now, but the then CEO of a company I worked for was quoted as saying that IT was a high cost, low value department...

Yup.

Think back to many many years ago.
IT was considered a primary resource that must be kept running at peak efficiency and everything was kept up to date etc and professionals were employed

Stop drooling, and come back to the present.
Budgets cuts - IT is the first thing to get fucked, regardless of what company or service relies on it and managers spunk over ITIL because they have no IT knowledge at all.
e.g. I worked in a place where my manager didn't know what a POP3 mailbox was.

Well it is isn't it, so long as everything is working fine, and business carries on as usual.

It's when it goes tits up, and vital functions stop working that it suddenly gains in value. The more shit that hits the fan, the greater loss in business, reputation, and the more people they have being paid while sitting on their arse unable to do their job, the greater the value that IT staff and equipment suddenly acquires.
