I have recently purchased a 2005 Suzuki ay50 katana R. It was fine for the first few weeks but today out of the blue engine bogged when I was pulling away and stopped. I started up again and I had a poor idol and after starting in giving a little throttle untill it ran. The engine stops after about 5 to 10 seconds. The problem is getting worse for about five minutes and I can only ride it about 20 mph for less than a minute before the engine stopped. I appreciate this may not been the best thing for the bike but I had an exam that I needed to get to and I couldn't be late. I was expecting problems when I left college but apart from a poor idol that wouldn't stay running without throttle. I don't believe the idol throttle needs adjusting but I have found out that the Katana has injectors not a carburettor. I'm going to purchase a replacement spark plug to check if that's a problem but does anyone know if it could be the injectors.

The response will probably be by most to get a new bike is mines old and is probably on its way out but I can get a 125cc in July and need the transport until then. A new bike isn't an option yes I just brought this because my other moped was broken.

If it is the injectors do I use injector cleaner or see if it can be cleaned by hand??

Any help is appreciated.
Thanks, George

Idle not idol
and it has just the one injector

I fixed up a similar Aprilia 50cc EFI scoot ages ago for a mate but memory is dim now so can only offer some generalities

Have you checked the oil supply?
The Aprilia had an electric oil pump and the clear pipe near the carb
helped you see if it was getting any.
To prime you had to hold the throttle fully open and turn on the ignition and wait for 45 seconds or so to get it to pump/prime.
this could also tell you if the pump was still working

Check the plug colour and condition as this will give clues as well

Check and clean electrical connectors around the engine
EFI engines can do all manner of odd things if the signals
go wonky

Oil is good
Pump works fine. When you turn the ignition you can hear it
The pipe that supply's oil is fine.
Never been told anything about priming it. I'm used to 4 strokes not 2 strokes. Is priming nescacary with the pump that comes on when you turn on the ignition??

Injectors do not get dirty in use, petrol keeps them clean. They only get dirty when the bike has been standing unusued for a very long time (a year or more) and the petrol turns to varnish, or if a bike with a steel fuel tank has been parked up for a very long time with the tank empty, and it rusts.

A small 2 stroke suddenly not making power. The first thing is to change the spark plug, they are a consumable item on that sort of bike.

Did you ever run it out of oil? Perhaps the light came on a couple of weeks ago, you kept riding because you had to get somewhere, then topped it up that evening? I ask because I did that when I was 16, and trashed the engine.

I always make sure oil is full. I fill it up whenever I do petrol.
I do know however that the bike had been left for a while. It's duration I'm unsure. If it was injectors would the problem of been there since I got it or could it play up out of the blue?
Defiantly gonna get a spark plug at some point. I'll let you know wether it fixes it

UPDATE:
I have replaced the spark plug. It seems to be a little happier now.
I noticed that online it says the spark plug is CPR9E but the plug in my bike was a CR9E. Also the electrode gap on the old plug was between 1-2mm so it's likely the cause of the problem.
I still have a rough idle and I have adjusted it slightly and it runs badly when idling cold but dosent die.

Also there's a light on my fuel gage labels "injector check" I don't know what it's for but it's been on most of the time I ride it since I got it. Does anyone know what it's for?

It's useful to say the engine management light is on when you start the thread, not two weeks later.
Work out how to read off the fault codes, and it should tell you the problem.

I believe the light is an electrical fault. I just wondered if it had any significance

Look in your manual. It's probably the FI fault light. There will be a way of reading off the fault codes.
Stop assuming. You don't know anything about diagnostics.
