I've just acquired a 1983 Suzuki GSX400F 4-cylinder bike. Runs fine, but I think that the gearbox rattles a bit too much when the clutch lever isn't pulled in (even in neutral). I'm used to a bit of rattle, but this is very audible on this one. Could it be a bearing in the gearbox?

It could be the clutch basket.

one of the problems with that bike was / is that the recommended oil level is too low ... subsequent it was recommended to over fill.. Thumbs Up

The clutch basket is a good guess. The gearbox is making a whirring noise when engine braking.

Yup, have heard the same from the former owner. The oil is just over the max marking, and it's fresh too.

Balance the carbs. Tends to settle down noisy clutch baskets.

Sounds like clutch release bearing.
