Right, my PC is acting up big time at the minute, some times it just reboots and crashes over and over for no reasons or it'll work for a few hours then the crashing starts again. Dunno what the crack is and don't have the patience to sort it, plus the hardware is over 6 years old now so may as well upgrade Thumbs Up

Current main specs:

AMD Phenom II X6 1055T 2.8GHz
Asus M4A88T-V EVO
8GB Corsair DDR3 RAM
XFX HD 5830
128GB Crucial M4 SSD

Honestly still a quick PC to use, probably because of the SSD. After a new set up now that will last another 6 years and even though I don't really game on PC it would be nice to able to handle recent games.

Ryzen seems interesting and always had AMD sets up in the past so leaning that way at the minute, but it's awkward researching new hardware on a phone. Anyone recently built a PC, just sort of looking for ideas, hopefully will be ordering everything this week Thumbs Up

Sucks to be you.

If you want to use win7, go Skylake.

Nope but just recently swapped the GFX to Nvidia for the first time in years. Suitably impressed.

Anyway, have you tried a fresh OS instal?

Also, what do you use your PC for? If it's gaming, then don't get the impression that an 8 core 16 thread CPU is what you need. A faster 4 core 8 thread will still be the better choice for the next 5+ years. Put the money difference towards a better GPU. If I was to build a new gaming PC today, I'd still go with a Intel K quadcore + Z chipset mother board. The i7-7700K (4.2/4.5 GHz out of the box) costs the same money as the Ryzen 7 1700 here, knowing the Intel chip doesn't really care what RAM you use (Ryzen benefits from very fast RAM). A i5-7600K would be enough though an even 30% cheaper than the i7/R7 1700.

If you want productive work, then AMD seems to be the best choice. When AMD tries to make Ryzen look better than Intel's CPUs, they always do the synthetic and productive work benchmarks.
Before people go mental, yes the K chips don't come with a cooler, but even a cheap tower type cooler will do, if you're alright with the out of the box clock speed of the Intel.

Tried reinstalling windows a few times now, bored of trying to fix it, might be software but I can't be bothered with such old hardware anymore.

Budget, I dunno. I want something that will last a while and be able to handle gaming (bf1 and such) reasonably well, £700ish should easily see to that with a case and psu.

No thanks to Mac Shocked

My old PC would randomly reboot constantly, even on the bios screen... after replacing the PSU thinking that was at fault, it turned out it was the reset button that was faulty, I just disconnected the reset button from the motherboard and never had a problem since

This is more of a random freeze thing, it happens some times if I open videos or even just during the boot up process or if I don't login. Anyhow, I've come up with a bit of a first draft:

CPU: AMD - Ryzen 5 1600 3.2GHz 6-Core Processor (£194.16 @ Ebuyer)
Motherboard: Gigabyte - GA-AB350-GAMING 3 ATX AM4 Motherboard (£102.00 @ Aria PC)
Memory: Crucial - Ballistix Sport LT 8GB (1 x 8GB) DDR4-2400 Memory (£54.99 @ Amazon UK)
Memory: Crucial - Ballistix Sport LT 8GB (1 x 8GB) DDR4-2400 Memory (£54.99 @ Amazon UK)
Storage: Crucial - MX300 275GB 2.5" Solid State Drive (£83.15 @ Aria PC)
Storage: Western Digital - Blue 2TB 3.5" 5400RPM Internal Hard Drive (£60.58 @ Ebuyer)
Video Card: Gigabyte - Radeon RX 580 4GB Gaming 4G Video Card (£203.47 @ Scan.co.uk)
Case: Fractal Design - Define R5 (Black) ATX Mid Tower Case (£82.96 @ Amazon UK)
Power Supply: EVGA - SuperNOVA G2 650W 80+ Gold Certified Fully-Modular ATX Power Supply (£83.99 @ Amazon UK)
Total: £920.29

Quite a bit more than I wanted to spend but aye will need to tweak it a bit.

As for hard drives, how come 5400rpm drives are so popular now? I'll only be using it for storage but that's a new trend I didn't notice till now.

Thumbs Up

Buy it.

But cough for a larger SSD.

I'd go for the 1600X, Fractal Design mini C and put the money difference of the cheaper case towards a larger capacity SSD and a mid range cooler for the 1600X.

Never understood the hate for Windows, I've had windows 10 on my laptop and my desktop since release the only issue I had was my joystick no longer worked and just would blue screen when I used it. To be fair it is 13 years old.

I put it on my missus' laptop and my parents computers about the same time all of those are still on the original install since it came out. No issues there at all. None of them are PC experts.

How are people screwing it up? It's been superstable for me and all I know.

I had Vista 64bit for 8 years, never had an issue, never had to reinstall the system. I only went to Win7 because ATi decided the Vista was not worthy of their GPU drivers anymore. New PC still runs on the Win7, but I'm kind of forced to get the Win10, as every work place I've been to had Win10, so I've got to get used to the new layout.

If I didn't do much gaming, I would stick with Fedora, by the way. Wink

I run a SSD for the C:\ and I instal there only the modern games that require (I require) faster loading times + no hard drive noise from the case while I play. Games such as Skyrim, Witcher, GTA... an SSD makes completely nicer experience with next to no loading times, compared to PS4/Xbox One or an ordinary HDD. Even a slow SSD is significantly faster than the fastes HDD on the market today.

EDIT: I could compare the Witcher 3 PS4 and PC version. When I click at the Witcher 3 icon on my desktop, it takes less than 10 seconds to start the game (start + load of the position). PS4 we're talking minutes. The same applies for all the in game loadings (fast travel, cinematics...). The game is good enough to be entertaining on both platforms, but PC (SSD) just does it better.

Needless to say, an SSD for your system drive is a must. It always surprises me how slowly Windows runs off an HDD.

On my desktop i have 2x1tb hardrives & two 840 pros, all of them are pretty much full.

My new laptop has windows on a pcie ssd, it takes me longer to type my password in than it does to boot up & get to the login scree. It's mostly a gimick as far as i'm concerned, at home i can wait 5 minutes for my desktop to fully boot up & all the startup programs to run; i can use that time to get changed when i get home from work.

Fair enough, I have pretty much all loaded onto my D drive as that is where Steam is installed. Still love Win7 although the missus now has 10 on her little notebook rubbish that I have to keep messing with for her.

I didn't even know about these things https://www.scan.co.uk/products/1tb-samsung-960-evo-v-nand-m2-pcie-gen-30-x4-nvme-11-3200mb-s-read-1900mb-s-write-380k-360k-iops

To the op, this is one of the latest that wont cost an arm:

https://www.pcadvisor.co.uk/test-centre/storage/best-ssds-for-2017-3235200/

And this is mine for comparison been running several years:

C:\= 120GB Intel SSD. With Windows and a couple of choice apps, it's mostly always 50% full.

L:\ = 750GB Hybrid SSD for games. Works really well, and isn't much slower than a normal SSD.

20TB of mechanical storage as well Laughing
