ok bike is a 2001 vtr1000
new battery, decent new reg/rec
stator produces decent ac voltage when running,
reg/rec is producing a decent and constant 14.4 ish vdc
when the bike is cold it cranks over fine and fires into life no problem
but if i ride say 10 mins or more and get the bike hot,
stop, and then try and start it, its like the battery doesnt have enough power to turn over the bike.
wait until its cold, say an hour, then it'll turn over and start fine.
its like some thing is tightening up when it gets hot,
but ive had it happen and had the mrs come with jump leads, and its started, so may be its some parasitic load when the bike is on.
may be the reg/rec if failing when it gets hot. (its a larger than standard rec, but not a mosfet version)
any ideas kids. ____________________ the humans are dead

Put a meter on the battery when it's hot and has the problem. If it's still holding voltage when it fails to crank, check your earths. ____________________ a.k.a 'Geri'

As mentioned check the earths and any powered accessories.
I had a reg/rec that worked fine when cold and then failed when it got hot. Found this out by riding with a voltmeter attached (plug-in type that goes in power adapter).
Fitted the new reg/rec in some airflow and seems ok. ____________________ Diabolical homemade music Bandcamp and Soundcloud

OK I checked the wiring,
found a bit of corrosion on the feed wires that come off the starter relay.
Cleaned them up,
added an extra earth from the battery to the subframe
And ran it up to 105'C to make sure the fan kicked in.
Stayed at a constant 14.4 with the lights off, and 14.3 with them on, 14.3 with the fan on as well.
A constant 0.6amps to the battery
And more when the lights.
Turned the bike off,
Voltage was 13.2v
Waited about 5 mins to simulate getting gas,
Temp was sitting at 87'C
Tried to turn over, drawing peaks of around 320amps
Averaging about 200amps, but not Turing fast enough to start.
Current voltage is 13.01volts and slowly raising.
Temp. 76' and dropping.
I'll check back in half an hour.
No charger connected. ____________________ the humans are dead

ok, just retested it.
temp has droped to 53'C
and voltages is 13.07V
turned over and started easily.

wtf is going on,
some thing must be expanding when its hot and increasing the resistance on the drive train making it hard to turn over.
any guesses? ____________________ the humans are dead

I reckon it is the start motor. Get it up to temperature where it fails then run a wire straight from the live side to the starter. if it does turn over I'd say that is your culprit, maybe trying doing it with a known good battery to be sure.
edit:
I've give this a go

i chucked the milli ohm meter on it, and was getting about 20 milliohms over a meter, which is about 10 times what i should get for pure copper at 10mm2 diameter, saying that, it looks like its tinned copper.
so thats out the window, and doesnt seem excessivly high considering. but i might make up some new leads, at maybe 16mm2
just to drop the resistance even more. considering coppers resistance increases with heat, it may be a factor (#pluckingatstraws) ____________________ the humans are dead
