hey guys
I've been fixing this one for a while now. Thought I'd start a new topic because the problem has changed. Basically ive replaced the piston rings and a valve on cylinder 4 and its had new gaskets. This was becuase it had low comression on that fourth cylinder.

Two problems now

Its over heating

and only running on cylinders 1 and 4. No spark going to 2 and 3. Coils and plugs are fine.

Did you clean the carbs.?
How do you know the coils and plugs are fine.
I thnk firing order is 1/2/4/3 but check this then you can change
the HT leads around to fine if it is the coil/plugs.

The two middle carbs have different springs and needles so you don't
want to mix them up.

It's an old bike and the rubber connectors from carb to engine
could be cracked.

carbs are clean. I've added bigger jets and pod filters though.

I switched around the cables that go to the coils and got a spark from 2 and 3.

Most likely electric.
The coil that didn't is not earthed or connected right.
I edited my post above for firing order.
Clean the frame where the coil goes and metal on the coil and see if that works.

Yea it was a sketchy cable. You think the over heating is from an incorrect firing order ?

Your first post says it's not firing on 2-3 so fuel is not getting
burnt.
Smell the oil to check if is smells of petrol.

Did you change the oil filter at the same time ,if you don't then the oil will stay in the filter so you use less.

Most 4 stroke depend on the right level of oil for the crank
spinning to oil the cylinders and pistons.

Crank spins and throws oil up to these parts if it's to high or
low it won't get thrown up.
Also

Yea new oil filter. running on all cylinders now. Exhausts become boiling hot in a few seconds.

Is the oil light staying on when you start it.?

Spray some wd40 on the rubbers between the carbs and see is smoke comes out of the exhaust to check if its airtight.
Running lean will cause it to run hotter.

Yes,if the oil is to high the pistons won't get oiled as in my post above.

If it's making the exhaust glow on idle and overheating then you better check the valve timing again. could be the carbs too but my guess is you're a tooth out on the cams.

I have a feeling that when you took the cams out some of the
valve shems moved out of place.

But is there a spark.

Check those rubbers as it's an old bike.
You say they're fine but you can't know for sure.
Read all the post in this thread incase you missed some.
