In an hail Mary attempt to not have a second car become a potato this month....

Mrs car, we believe is deaded. AA man concurs. Just wanted to see what you guys think before claiming my £37 from a scrapyard.

Driving on motorway, warning light came on saying the car was over heating... she pulled over and sent me this picture....

Apparently oil has made its way into the coolant and went pop. Head Gasket was mentioned.

Should I call time of death now, or is there anything that can me done to resuscitate.

OP, it's still worth more than £37. It overheated for a reason. Coolant pump failure, a hose got lose (by the look of it), stuck thermostat, cracked engine head...

That coolant looks awful, by the way. I know there is blue, green and red coolant. Never heard of mud colour one. Razz

yeah looks like the engine jizzed all over its self

head gasket is not always terminal it would depend on whether the head has warped or not. its not beyond the home mechanic with a decent tool kit and space to work to replace one.

what car is it?

If the head gasket has gone and caused that, then the cylinder gasses are pressurising the coolant system, hence assplosion all over your engine bay.

I'm not sure if that colour is due to the head gasket going, but I'm going to go ahead and guess that's the original factory coolant which is now a nice and rusty brown.

If it's an cheap, old car of no sentimental value, then I would just replace the head gasket and hope for the best. Wrapped head test is quite simple, google that up. There are even people that specialise in fixing this issue, I suppose they just grind off 0.001mm off the mating surface to make it level with the cylinders again.

The car was quite possibly losing coolant prior to this.

Ah ok fantastic, thank you all. I think I will look into this more then...

One thing though, even if I am to replace / fix the head gasket, is it worth it for a £1800 car?

And also, again, IF i am able to sort it, will there now be a lot of oil in my cooling system, which i assume is bad?

Yes.

This is not really a question of money. How much does a head gasket for your car cost? £50 for the head gasket replacement kit?

Turn it into a DIY fun sunday, it'll make you feel great afterwards, I promise you that. Wink

I actually have some time off, so I may well have a go at this.

I was fully accepting of the car being deaded, so certainly worth a go. Time to do some research online...

Any websites / manuals recommended for this type of thing? Maybe a haynes manual would be ideal?

Yep, Haynes should give you all the info you're gonna need. Check youtube as well. Not really a complicated job. I get it the engine is not running anyway, so you can't really make things worse. Thumbs Up

From the Op`s post Im guessing a DIY fix is way out of the picture,
If the car wasnt driven very far then you may be lucky, but if it was hot for a while and driven the the heads gonna be warped and the engine goosed,
if it was stopped pretty quick then there is a chance to save it, is the rest of the car worth the £400 bill to sort this ?

Factor in the cost of having the head professionaly skimmed by a local engineering outfit plus the cost of a reasonable torque wrench.
I'd be surprised if by the time you're done, you haven't spent around 300 notes.
That's assuming you want to take on actually replacing the gasket yourself.

As said, take the head off, have a look, if it's alright, just replace the head gasket (£30-£50 for the replacement kit). If the head is fecked, then decide wether you get a different head (ebay) or have it skimmed, or sell/scrap the car.

Worth noting, scrapping a car because of leaking head gasket would be a waste of money. That, if the rest of the car is in alright working condition.

But, that's me. I bet the Mrs. is already picking up a new car online as we speak. Razz

a typical head swap time wise says 4 hours, so for it to suggest double it tells me there are a few things to mess with,
so I use Autodata as a guide to how difficult a job could be,

I wouldnt have bought a Pug in the first place.

Definite case for bangernomics.

Scrap car. Buy new car at auctions with long MOT for a few hundred quid, run for year. MOT and either keep or scrap depending on results/costs.

Repeat.

Missus gets a new old car each year, everyones happy Thumbs Up

How would an oil cooler contribute to puking coolant all over the engine?
