I know, 'use the search' blah blah. I have, and I'm still wondering if it's really worth having so shell out about £300 on a basic Microserver just to do NAS.

The cashback offer on the HP ends today, so there's no danger of me being quick enough to snag one for a theoretical £125 plus storage.

Opinions, please?

Microserver is many many times more versatile than a NAS.

It's awesome.

Only Harley a rider would buy a non-enterprise NAS.

ok. I get it. It's a gay solution to a problem. But it's still *a* solution, and if it's the only problem I want fixing right now, is it really that bad?

I have a sick cat that's about to cost me a Monkey. I would have prolly splooshed on something bling were it not for that.

what other nas boxes were you looking at, most of the fairly decent one's run at about £100-150 without disks anyway. You get a lot more for your money even if you're only using it for storage.

I would say you'd need a fair bit of technical knowledge to get the microserver up and running, although there's some useful guides around that can help you. It's not as plug and play as most nas solutions.

The cat will appreciate the box in which the microserver arrives in.

I have a seagate central 3tb (i think) NAS, that has been unplugged and unused for a while now as I used it only for storing movies.

You can have it for £40 posted if you were interested

The Synology NAS boxes are good and for basic home use they're cheap.

Very easy to setup, low power consumption and quiet.

Comes with just about all the software you're likely to want.

Standard 2 bay Synology DS216j comes in at about £140 without disks, microserver is cheaper and better in just about every way, except possibly ease of setup.

Massively OT, but because cat, well...

No, little furry fucker lives another day! He's been getting thinner for a few months and I kinda knew he wasn't right, but as he was still perky enough I left well enough alone. Over the weekend he was hacking about and doing a weird chattery teeth thing. Blood from mouth. Call to vet, appointment made for Yesterday first thing. Get there, vet looks glum. LPT - Never ignore a glum looking vet. Operation outlined to remove several teeth. Plus the possibility of tests, to diagnose why he's thin.

Then a call, vet sounds glum. Operation started ok but went downhill quickly. Breathing difficulties. Xray revealed fluid in chest. Drugs, manual drain, operation 'backed out of' but still got some of the teeth out. Prognosis very not good. Talk about cancer or heart problems, mentioning words beginning with a big 'E'. I had a very large sad.

Later in the day he perked up a little, but vet wasn't unglum, so stayed in overnight.

Today, cat is much, much better. Still has the cause of the fluid unknown, but on drugs and firmly told that if the drugs don't manage it, learn words in the fifth chapter of the dictionary a little more thoroughly as they'll be discussed again.

I still have cat. He smells like a hospital, but he works like he's supposed to for now. I do not have £430 I had before.

£430 well spent.

My last bill was just over £1000, but I'd have tripled that to keep my cat.

Hope its manageable for furry fudger.

Hence why I'm pointing it out Wink all comes does to use case scenario and technical ability, what's right for some is not right for others. I would take the Microserver over almost any soho nas solution, but that's because I feel comfortable configuring it, others may not.

glad he's ok, little bastards are heartbreakers, at least you have a bit more time together

I think I'll sit this HP offer out, wait for the next time they're on offer and plan it a bit more. I've no fear setting up a Linux server, and to be fair I didn't think the NAS offerings would work out as expensive as the (discounted) proper solution.

Although I only want to use it as a dustbin now, I see me wanting a Zoneminder setup sometime soon too, so it does make sense to overspec somewhat.

That deal come's and goes, it also sounds like they may be releasing a new gen10 in which case the prices of the current gen8's will drop anyway.

Things do add up quickly, but you can build up the upgrades over time.

At the moment mine's running hypervisor which means I can install just about anything on it virtualised. Running Server 2016, ubuntu, debian, kali and have a few others turned off on standby, win 10, 7, xp etc for testing.

Zoneminder is running on the ubuntu box with a couple of security cams, not a bad bit of kit.

I'd like to replace the raid with a full hardware controller, but to be fair it's been fine so far.

I love my HP Microserver, bought it about 2 years ago I think. I have a Gen8 with 4 x WD Red 3TB drives. All I did spec wise was add an extra 2GB of RAM, to make a total of 4GB, works fine for my basic duties.

I use it to back up all my data, I also keep copies on my desktop and my laptop. It is also used for streaming video and music across my network and providing remote access to my files when I am not at home.

I don't use it to encode video on the fly or anything, like a server running Plex would, so it doesn't get ran hard so to speak.

Oh and I run Xpenology, very very simple UI, intend on running something a little more resource efficient eventually, but this is working just fine for now.

Ok. Microserver got.

Problems already though. Fecker will not boot to USB at all.

With regular incidence, I get booted from the ilo session when it tells me it's not licensed after POST.

No video output on the inboard VGA, despite fiddling with all 3 options (enabled, disabled, 'primary', 'secondary', etc.)

I obviously don't know enough.

ok, toys back in the pram now. Turns out they're extremely picky on USB boot media and I'm not great at reading details when picking the correct options to put the FreeNAS ISO onto it.

It's up with some semblance of OS, and I can apparently use it. Wickedlike.

I'mma call the thing Ralph.
