So after 3+ years of back pain my GP very reluctantly referred me for an MRI scan. The scan shows a bulged disc (second from bottom apparently) pressing on a nerve. Being referred to a specialist but I'm just wondering if anyone speaks doctor and/or has experience of something similar:

New disc needed.

Might as well do the pads while you're at it.

I'm quite possibly suffering from something similar myself. I don't actually know, because I've never had the follow-up treatment/examination that I should have had to find out. I was too busy moving house etc. And, I really don't want to see the inside of any more hospitals!
I think I busted ribs at the same time, and suspect they haven't healed properly this time too, aggravating matters. I'm an idiot really Very Happy

I have/had similar. With mine it made my leg go spazzy due to the nerve it was pressing (it still does on cold damp days). Was caused by a bike crash and exacerbated by my GP just giving me more and more painkillers whenever I went and told him I was still broken.

They'll dose you to the eyeballs on Tramadol, if you keep pestering them they will offer you physio/rehab, I went to an excellent one at Salisbury hospital where they showed ways to minimise the pain and the correct kinds of exercises (also the therapists were mostly seriously hot).

They may offer surgery depending on severity and location. You drive vans?....... you may want to see if you can sidestep in to your transport office, rattling about in a sprinter all day is probably not helping.

See above. Not allowed to drive unless given the all-clear by the GP.

Yep, nothing aggravates it like the seats in a Transit, and their complete lack of lumbar support Neutral

A little bit. "bulged disc (second from bottom apparently) pressing on a nerve" pretty much covers it, I'd say. The bits where it says "Normal appearances... no retroperitoneal abnormality" etc is just saying that other nasties which cause long-term back pain, like cancer in the spine, are not present.

Can't help with treatment options etc, but I think this is a pretty subjective area, and you'd probably do well to get more than one opinion. Oh, one important tip... if you end up needing surgery for this, which does happen, make damned sure you get operated on by a neurologist and not an orthopaedic surgeon Shocked

They can get it this wrong?! (if wrong it turns out to be).

If by 'wrong', you mean using the wrong surgeon, then not at all - the point is that spinal surgery is carried out by surgeons from both
backgrounds (as there's crossover); just saying, I wouldn't want an orthopod scrabbling around with my spinal cord...

There was a mention of surgery or an injection, I'm guessing if it does require operating on you have to wait quite a long time (being non-emergency)?

Not doctor speak but I believe that's what your common or garden layman used to call, misguidedly, a slipped disc.
Which doesn't really help you much. Laughing

Be thankful it's not at 3L or 4L, then you'd, be fucked. Or possibly not.

You'll probably be started on physio if your GP is particularly tight.

I've been refereed to physio a few times (probably 20+ sessions in total) over the last few years, the physio even said I might have a bulged disc the last time, but they still didn't want to give me a scan. Got to think it would have cheaper to diagnose the problem properly.

Couldn't say, but sounds likely doesn't it?
I've just remembered my brother had this problem about 15 years ago, and he had it operated on (by a neurologist! Wink) Was very successful - anyway he certainly doesn't whinge about his back any more, which is why it slipped (no pun intended) my mind. FWIW he drives about 30,000 miles a year as well.

Snap! (pun intended) I have a prolapsed disc L5/S1

Not mine, but it looks something like this:

I was in a similar situation, back pain/sciatica/leg cramps over a number of years. Had a really bad episode last year where I couldn't even pee properly so they finally decided to send me for a MRI

The specialist did suggest surgery was an option, but recommended against it as he said it could actually cause more damage

He said if the symptoms got bad I could have injections, and suggested a course of physio

I haven't had a big issue since I got the results last November although I do still get bad cramps in my calves, which also reminds me, I'm overdue for my review and need to book an appointment

I had a similar thing but with L-4 and L-5. It laid me up for nine months with a crippling pain down my right leg where the sciatic nerve is. I was given Tramadol and diazepam which was very addictive and I can now see how people get addictive to prescription drugs.
The pain really wore me down, as did not being able to walk properly and it really made me appreciate my health.

Interesting about the leg cramps, I had the same thing. If they recommend more physio I'll probably lose it, it's a load pseudo BS.

Yeah, I'd had a bad cramp the same day as my appointment and just thought I'd mention it, and he said it was most likely related. LustyLew's chart specifically mentions it too for L5 injuries

I was chatting to my physio about treatment on my back (was having treatment on my knee at the time) and he said it can help. I did ask why, considering I thought it unlikely it was going to push the bulge back in it's place, but he suggested it was more about managing my posture better, and improving my core strength so issues were less likely

I had 2 adjacent discs doing the exact same thing. Ended up with a double discectomy to slice off the bulges, a scar on my lower back that has puckered up like an arsehole, and only occasional pain nowadays, unlike the constant, nausea-inducing pain of the past.

I thought that because they spent ages sending me on crappy little sessions that did nothing.

Push your GP if there is a rehab course at your local hospital. I did one at Salisbury that involved Physio's, Doctors and Occupational therapists (included amongst other stuff scans, hydrotherapy, work evaluations, gym, pain management). It was four days a week, once a month for 4 months. It was intensive enough and well staffed enough that it actually helped alot.

Thanks to that course I managed to go from living on double the daily dose of Tramadol to being painkiller free with minimal discomfort (though kicking an 18 month tramadol habit is a real bitch).
