What you need to start taking is Collegen type 2 with Hyaluronic acid. It will help the disc reabsorb back. I cannot stress enough how good this is, my partner is a physio and sees people using this and changes there quality of life drastically.

I hope yours looks better than this M.C, it's where I'm at.

On the subject of physio, well it caused me more pain with no gain, both NHS and private. Painkillers: Pregabalin, Gabapentin, Amitriptyline, Tramadol, Cocodamol (works but horrific constipation). Best thing for my pain and no noticeable side effects is Satijah 500mg original hemp cbd, as it happens I'm a bit of a vaper.

Good luck mate!

Used to work in an ortho theatre, and L-S discofusions were everyday ops. When I needed C4-5-6 discofusion it was done by a neuro.
hmm. No use to you, but don't worry majorly, just keep at them. Should be a bit easier now the mri has been done. Stay off the trampoline.

What exercises did the physio recommend for the L5s1 herniations? I returned to work on Thursday after 4 weeks off with suspected L5s1 injury. I’m still on cocodamol (had to ditch the diazepam as I was too floaty) and walking like I have stick rammed up my butt. Made it through the shift, thanks to brilliant colleagues. But I’d have been in trouble if anyone needed CPR. I only returned to work as I was bored stiff and don’t get sick pay.

Dr won’t refer me anywhere until after 6 weeks. Have seen a chiropractor who has basically said don’t do anything with a twist. Has me on hands and knees arching back up and then all the way down. Lying flat on back and lifting each leg. Left leg can point to the ceiling with minimal swearing. Right leg only comes about a ft off the floor and kills. (Pretty sure I could ride, but can’t actually get on my bike.) Apart from fondling me with his horrible hairy hands, only other thing he has me doing is lying flat and bringing knees up to chest – and lying face down and lifting upper body off floor. Anything else I can safely be doing to speed recovery?

Am not having any of the usual sciatica type pains. But am having fun with lady parts and inner thighs getting pins and needles type sensation. This originally made the Dr a bit hysterical but if I walk around for a bit it goes away. Was told to go to A&E and would need immediate surgery if I become incontinent. Shocked

TL;DR What exercises for L5s1?

Freddyfruitbat pretty much nailed it.

If you're even slightly uncomfortable with your specialist or their team then back out sharpish (no pun intended). I've met a few people at pain clinics who had "routine spinal surgery" and henceforth existed on a cocktail of prescription medication, the most extreme of them could only sleep if he was draped face down over a big gym ball to keep the spine curved.

I was diagnosed with spinal problems quite a few years back (see THIS post if you can be arsed). These days I walk with crutches and tend to be a whimpering mess if faced with a flight of stairs but I've stayed out of a chair so far and avoided the surgeons knife as it has seemed to be the option of last resort - in my opinion - when you simply have to take the chance it'll fix you. Obviously YMMMV, no two people have exactly the same problems and it may be a simple operation, but one thing that coming on for two decades of reading, learning and experiencing the issues surrounding spinal surgery has taught me is that it's an incredibly complex and intricate field, and it's one that none of the really knowledgeable surgeons claim to totally understand.

TL;DR - Lose weight, keep fit and get a gym ball. Core strength > all.

Well I'm under 9 stone and cycle a lot, but I do need to look into pilates etc. TBH this referral is too far off to be of any use, so I'm gonna try all I can in the next few months, give Collegen type 2 (as recommended above) a go although I've not had much success with supplements in the past. I appreciate the info' Karma

Under 30, but it started when a van tried to kill me (none before then).

Mine was probably caused back in 1993 when I came off my mountain bike and wrapped myself round a tree

47 but it started when I was 21.

I played football and took a kicking in one game in particular. I drove home afterwards, sore and tense, and as I walked from my car to the door I sneezed and went down like a sack of shit.

I put up with back pain then for 23 years - the worst pain would come and go, leaving a constant, dull sciatic pain - until I was unable to walk, sit or lie down on my back. The specialist thought that was probably the time that the second disc prolapsed.

I had the surgery and I've been pretty good since. I do get bad days but the far majority are pain free.

I have one odd symptom of a numb big toe, under the nail, and the only times the toe feels normal are when I have some sciatic pain instead.

All things considered though, the surgery has given me the best result I could have hoped for.

*bump* Got to see my scan today, so pictures:

https://i62.servimg.com/u/f62/15/13/82/47/scan_110.jpg

^It's the one at the 45ish degree angle. It's not that bad so surgery wouldn't help, they apparently cut off part of the disc, so if you're not having massive problems with your legs they don't. Also the (pain) injection's meant to be like an epidural, but doesn't help heal the problem.

So I was referred for more physio (Rolling Eyes) but there's a 6-8 week waiting list. I'll see what it's like at the hospital but I'm expecting the same sort of thing; do these shite exercises which achieve virtually nothing.

Anyhoo it was nice to finally talk to someone who knows their stuff. The most interesting part was that they called BS on the whole muscular back pain thing I've been told for 3 years, the doctor said there's a cause for the muscular pain, it doesn't come on by itself.

Still not 100% what triggered the problem, if it was my accident or my job or both. I was told basically to stop doing manual/menial/degrading jobs, although I've kinda reached that conclusion myself, and that discs can heal if you stop aggravating them.

tl;dr no surgery, so no dibs on bike/stuff.

An off-duty neurosurgeon told me to tell the GP to refer me to the neurosurgeon, next time my sciatica got bad.

I said the simple phrase: "Refer me to the neurosurgeons" to the GP.

No asking; no waiting for him to suggest it.

The GP immediately referred me to the neurosurgeon and I had a disc removed. That was after years of the GP fobbing me off with a "lower back pain" diagnosis and painkillers.

Had a discectomy in August, after living on Tramadol, Oramorph, Gabapentin, and slow release Morphine since April.

Has been unable to drive, walk, or rude.

Best medical intervention I've ever had!

Waking up from the op, the pain reduction was immediately noticed.

I'm still healing, 6 months apparently, but off routine pain killers, and occasional mild back pain, as opposed to feeling like Napalm had been poured down the inside of my right leg!

It comes off as the kind of euphemism that needs to be whispered.

"Terribly sorry dear, I don't feel up to rudeness today."

A friend on mine, Juris died last year from what had been diagnosed for 2 years as sciatica, turns out it was a massive cancerous tumour in his leg.
Tumour got so large it snapped his femur. He had the chemo for cancer and then died on the table a year later when they tried to rebuild his leg.
