following this post... https://www.bikechatforums.com/viewtopic.php?p=4453267#4453267

...and out of curiosity I've been running some insurance quotes on various bikes of varying age, value and desirability (subjective i know).

Turns out I can insure [for a reasonable premium, TP only] the following bikes;

ER6N (2012)
MT03-660 not 300 (2008)
Hornet (2009)

Out of these bikes, which would you go for and why? Bearing in mind it's for all year commuting, must be reliable and frankly just keep going with no fuss.

Should note, I've ridden the ER6N before and thought it was pretty good as a commuter, not ridden the others.

Thumbs Up

Before that, do you know what you're going to do to avoid being third time lucky unlucky?

Those bikes are hardly shitters and will be scum magnets in Londonistan.

Also... hornet

Not much I can change at home, my chain is the best I can get and it's wrapped around a tree. My disc lock proved it's worth during the last theft. And I now have a tracker which I shall be installing as soon as I get a bike.

At work things have changed for the better, I now have secure underground parking on a private commercial estate. Security is super tight and bike bays are on basement 2 so very out of sight.

That said, if pikey wants, pikey gets, all I can do is slow them down a little.

In your shoes I'd go for an early ER6N. I hate the things but an older one that looks a bit scruffy is probably less of a thief magnet than the other 2.

Speed in terms of commute time isn't a factor as my commute took as long on a GSXR as it did on my old PCX125, in fact I'm sure the PCX was a bit quicker.

Speed generally is also not a factor as I've never been into the high speed riding thing.

Pick up, throwability and nimbleness is probably more applicable on my commute. Very much inner city, lots of filtering, lots of peds, lots of wheeling backwards to make tight gaps.

I'm similarly inclined, partially because I've ridden the bike before so know what to expect but also as you say, it's not so attractive to look at!

ER6 is ideal for that IMO. Very easy to filter and feels peppier at low revs than a lot of bigger bikes, including the VFR800. Hornet likely more fun on leisure rides but I'd take the ER6 for blatting about town. Great turning circle too.

Hornet can get toasty if you don't filter. Not terminal toasty, but uncomfortable toasty. I'd still choose it over the others, and I'm not a big fan of IL4's. It picks up a bit after 7K, but don't expect sportsbike antics, you'll be disappointed. ER6 is blander than any Hornet, and I know dick all about the Yam.

Er6n over hornet 600. Lack of engine braking makes it awkward when filtering. Fuel economy too. Imho, MT03 over both, handles like a BMX in traffic if you hustle it, and it's a single! Heart says MT03, er6n wìns if you want an all rounder. Hornet isn't bad at all, but, it would depend on bike.

Thanks all for the input. Thumbs Up

The curious side of me is keen to have a play on the MT03 for a while, just because I've never ridden a single and it's the cheapest to insure out of the lot.

The sensible side of me is thinking ER6N as I've ridden it before and it checks out on all fronts.

Will call insurance one more time to be double sure it's legit and there are no hidden bummings coming my way. If all is as it appears I'll probably make a decision soonish.

Hornet, make it a rat bike project.

Lots of exhaust tape, spray-on rust and uneven rivets should do the trick. Also don't use the stand, just lean it against a pile of something in the garage.
