Came out to bike just now, but no power. No dash lights, nothing. I can't recall if it was like that from the moment I turned the key, or if it was thumbing the starter thatkilled it.
Checked the main fuse and those in the relay box under the right hand panel.

Anything I should be checking? I don't think it is the battery as it has been fine before now, no problems turning over even after cold nights, so I don't see why it would die so totally.

Better start looking for train times...

Assuming you haven't flattened the battery, when I got nothing, when the ignition was turned on, it turned out to be a wire that had rubbed on the frame, rubbed the insulation away and was consequently, shorting to the frame!
Check the main earth, if it's the old type of tubular fuse, check you have no corrosion going on within the holder!

Battery has been well behaved so far and started it up fine this morning, but I'm lugging the multimeter and some makeshift bypass cables back to it tomorrow to try and avoid a recovery all the way home (27miles is a long, expensive way).

Don't suppose you know where the main earth is on the CB500 do you? I know there is one on the rec/reg mounting bolt and one on the starter motor mounting bolt but I have no idea which is which.

Blade fuses, but the fuses will all be getting checked anyway

My bike was like that on Monday. then I remembered that Ste had been in my garage with me on Sunday evening. Checked the kill switch. Everything came back on....

Mr. Green sadly I don't think Ste made it all the way up here. Checked the kill switch (several times). In any case, the kill switch doesn't stop the dash from lighting up, does it.

The kill switch kills all the power including the lights on my triumph.

Ah fair do's then. It's an engine only kills switch on the CB (I know because on more than 1 occasion I have wondered why it won't turn over when the dash is lighting up)

Well got it working (enough to get it home).
Looks to have been a couple of things. With the ignition on there was charge getting all the way to the starter relay but not beyond. Checked the main fuse and then sprayed some WD-40 into it as a last ditch attempt before trying bumpstarting.

Success! bike came to life, hit the starter and it turned over no problem! Turned it off, got changed and turned key, dash lights up, hit the starter, loud *click* and the lights die again.

Checking the starter relay again and I am getting intermittent 0 readings. Then the same on the battery terminals? Noticed when moving the probe around there was a spark jumping onto the probe tip. Took the battery out and cleaned the terminals and screws with WD40 and tissues. Seems to have fixed it? Dash came back, turns over fine, rode home fine. Going to clean relay and battery contacts properly this weekend...and maybe price up another starter relay.
