Just been asked to look at/ try an recover a portable 2.5 drive (WD)

Plug the drive in, an it seems to spin up then gets a flashing white light on the front of the enclosure

Can see the disk in "Disk Managment" within 7, shows size of drive etc, but not accessible - in fact Disk Management crashes when you try to access the drive.

Gonna see if i can use a Linux Livedisk, not confident though.

Anyone ever recovered one of these?

Nope, just curious how old's the drive? Wondering if you might have more luck removing the drive from the enclosure, depending on the model (I believe the 1TB models were soldered in*).

*Made them unpopular for PS4 hard drive upgrades

+1 for this I had a couple of external WD Drives fail. One I rescued the data after pulling the drive out the enclosure the other one span up but was still dead as a dead thing even after removing. 50/50 results for me.

If its soldered on unlucky. There are some really good open source recovery tools but I have not looked in to it in ages. I remember one time when I was getting a RAID array recovered for work and I was watching the guys do it in their lab. I went home and googled the software and all the tools they used were free, they were charging about £300 for an hours work at the time...

Yap its deffo soldered on.

God knows how old it is, looks a bit manky though.

Weirdly I left it connected to a Win7 machine an forgot about it an the flashing light stopped, was still unreachable via explorer/ management etc

just running an update on our Exchange box at the moment but will have another go when i get a chance.
