120 flats. Just had a £10 Million refurb, fire alarms didn't go off. People shouting from the streets woke up residents.

<bnp72> London? Judging by the locals they were interviewing, are you sure it isn't Mogadishu? </bnp72>

Cause: lack of Nutella and Gummi Bears.

And every single reference to this refurbishment I can find mention thermal efficiency and cladding. I might be jumping to conclusions here, so I won't pin it to this case, just yet, but:

Being a Property Underwriter right through to my core, and having studied with the Fire Protection Association and seen the detrimental impact that Approved Doc B has had on the fire protection of buildings (and of course inevitably, the protection of life, regardless of whether ApDB says otherwise), I really wish they'd just learn that sticking flammable insulation materials to the outside of high rise buildings adds to both fire load and development hazard.

The stuff is nasty and no U value in the world is worth people getting barbecued for.

I'll go for a Beko product being involved.

Another tumble dryer . . .
A witness said it started in the flat opposite his girlfriends, and that the neighbour said it started in her kitchen, which then went out a open window and up the tower block cladding.

Tower block across the road has a flat with tin-foiled windows. Weed makes you paranoid, right, so that sounds like a perfect feedback loop.

Other tower block across the road is having polystyrene cladding put on the outside. It's taken months so far, their car park has been taken over, such disruption, but I'm sure they'll be glad to be warmer.

Just not too warm.

Sort of place you should pay market rents to live Whistle Half of the tower blocks in London don't meet fire standards or European housing standards, still I doubt BCF will shed a tear over some peasants dying.

Just part and parcel of living in a big city, bruv.

The root cause is high population density: people who insist on living in London despite constant carping on about it being too expensive because of all those other selfish freeloaders that won't consider living anywhere else.

Any self respecting landlord with half a brain wouldn't touch a tower block property for what I'd hope are self explanatory
reasons. Freehold baby, all the way.

I was up at 5am ssw the news and first thought was that looks like the cladding. You csn bet the local council has got itself a whole bunch of energy efficiency brownie points wrapping its tower blocks in polystyrene so alls well.

Quote:
The mechanisms of external fire spread

Ignition of composite panels, even those with combustible cores, is not usually instantaneous, but there are various core materials used and they have very different ignition properties. The early stages of fire development are relatively slow. It is only in well-developed fires that the combustible cores burn with savage intensity. However, polymeric core materials such as EPS and PUR will burn at temperatures well below that of a fully developed fire and thus contribute to fire spread.

There is a risk in fire conditions that composite panels are attacked at the joints, or the panels suddenly delaminate and the metal facing falls away, thus exposing the combustible core which then intensifies and spreads the fire. The sudden increase in fire severity can accelerate the failure of the adjacent panels, so that if a fire does take hold, it can race up or through an entire facade of a building, causing a major hazard to occupants and a major property loss. Foam cores exposed through damage, fixings or penetrations will ignite sooner than intact panels. Aluminium has a much lower melting temperature than steel and aluminium facings will fail earlier.

Delaminated panels can fall off the building, raining down hot metal and burning foam insulation on the surrounding area, with risk of personal injury and of starting secondary fires. In The Address fire, a strong wind blew some of the fiercest flames away from the building, but burning panels drifted up to a street block away and ignited secondary fires on adjacent roofs, despite the fire service’s rapid attendance and their hosing down rooftops from tall aerial platforms.

Ran by an ALMO I believe. They've been doing this across London, tarting up council flats whilst at the same time saying they want to pull them down. I think that's why tin foil hats are twitching on the ground.

Official advice to residents was to wet a towel, put it under the door and await rescue. Stupidly they listened to that.

Sad

Yep, Fire & Rescue crews apparently never made it past the 12th floor at the height of the fire, there are 24 floors in total
