I have a 1998 Honda VFR800 that I bought as a cheapish bike for touring.

I ride with pillion a lot and have noticed that the ground clearance isn't great and the rear wheel can bottom out sometimes. It wallows a bit too.

Are there any good UK suspension tuners that could refurbish the shock?

I'm trying to convince myself that a Hyperpro front and rear setup bespoke to my weight requirements is too much money (£600), I need a cheaper solution.

I know some people use a Cbr 929 shock but that requires modifying the linkage. A company in the states can do all this and supply shock but it'd be close to £400.

Have you adjusted the preload or damping yet?

I'm 13 stone and my lady is 10 stone.

I spoke to Hyperpro and they said the vfr is known for its soft suspension and that owners sometimes start experiencing problems with damping after 30k.

TW Suspension in Preston, Lancashire are extremely good. I had a setup the other week and would highly recommend them.

After much thought, I've just ordered a Nitron shock from Brooks for £440. Probably more than I should be spending considering the value of my old vfr, but about the cheapest custom setup shock and from a well regarded shock manufacturer and supplier.

Just gotta wait about 3 weeks now.

Thanks for the help guys. Decided against a shock rebuild as it would still be a fairly low quality shock and I wouldn't be able to ride whilst the shock was away

Be sure to follow up and let us know how it compares.

Mine is at the 30k mark and could almost certainly do with an overhaul. Once I get my finger out of my bum and get the Pigaso back on the road I intend to get the Viff up on the lift and get it done.
