I need to send my licence back to the DVLA to change the address (can't do it online as they don't recognise my address yet).
I remember a while back there were stories of licences coming back with missing entitlements. Is that still going on and is there anything I can do to protect myself from it?

Take a picture of your current entitlements?

Are you sure you haven't just'lost' your current licence and simply need a replacement?

That. Never, ever surrender a license card. Just tick the "lost" box.

However, the actual plastic bit is largely irrelevant now, it's just ID. The point of truth is the online portal.

https://www.gov.uk/view-driving-licence

You can screenshot that all you like, but if DVLA decide to remove categories, there's not much that you can do.

"Lose" your licence or wait until they recognise your new address.

You still have your pass certificates, right?

What people are neglecting to mention is that "losing" a licence will cost you £20, whereas changing the address is free.

If they want to remove entitlements, they'll remove entitlements. Having a photo of the old one isn't going to do much, they'll just say it's photoshopped or something.

I'd just go for it and change the address. It'll be fine.

I seem to recall there being a checkbox for lost when you changed address. Not?

Anyway, we're living in the far flung future now, it seems like you can do it online free and gratis:

https://www.gov.uk/change-address-driving-licence

Go for it, see if it insists on you returning your "licence" for no good reason at all.

Not anymore, I did mine recently for a name change and it doesn't give you multiple options. Lost = cough up. And threatens fines for not returning it.

At my last change of address, they didn't want the old licence back, but I had to promise to destroy it when the new one turned up.

Cough up the £20 for the one you just 'lost'!
If it has the correct entitlements on it, it is proof of those entitlements, Even a copy of your licence notarised by a solicitor will not be accepted as evidence of anything by the DVLA!

I may or may not be able to find 4 licences, if I looked really hard! Wink
Considering they sent an application form to renew my photocard to an address I hadn't lived at for 10 years, I simply don't trust the bunch of useless fookers at the DVLA, they make too many mistakes and will never admit them!

+1 for what Nobby said. They ask you to destroy old one when new one arrives. (Twice in last 3 years.)

Applying on-line requires registering with the Government Gateway,

Your details
Your addresses
Your driver record
Security details
National Insurance number
UK passport number
Password reminders

Seems like a bit of a faff, and possibly untrustworthy. Does anyone have any experience with the Government Gateway (perhaps for other services like tax returns)? I think I'll post my application.

I use it for tax stuff.

Don't ever lose your details, is all.

Online would be great but like I said they don't recognise my address yet (I'm registered with the gateway for other reasons). I think I might just hang on till they update their info rather than send it in by post.

3K tax refund processed via it with no issues at all direct to my bank account.....

Far safer than some post monkey taking a lucky dip into the DVLA post bag and pulling a few out Rolling Eyes

Yeah, I use it for tax returns because it's so much easier than the paper form.
So when I started doing the Driving stuff it was quite easy.
It's a reasonably well-thought out system & data transparency (ie they tell you what data they're accessing & if they're sharing it between departments) is better than any private company I've dealt with.

I just started registration for the Government Gateway but then quit. They want too much information about me. I want a driving licence, not an identity card.

Your driving license is an identity card.

But yes, it is a total faff to sign up. That's why I said don't lose your details if you do. Wink

I know, but it doesn't link to my NI number or common security questions, for example. Call me over-cautious but this is how I protect my on-line security.

Legally, it most certainly is not.

You know what else isn't "legally" an identity card?

Arrow The dead wasp on my windowsill.
Arrow A bus ticket.
Arrow Pieces of string spelling out your name.
Arrow A library card.
Arrow The Official UK ID card.

Or anything else, after January 21st 2011.

However, the last one, like a driving licence, and conceivably even a library card, are identity cards, in the sense that they are cards which can be shown to provide evidence of your identity.

Now, perhaps you'd like to fite about something that I did say, rather than something that I didn't.

No thank you, I don't need to win an internet argument about semantics. Legally correct is the best kind of correct Very Happy

For a moment there I thought a block was going to be knocked off.

Anyhow, turns out you can't get a change of address form at a local Post Office, you have to go to the main PO in town. Faff is the word.
