My Deauville is ex-Parcel Force and used to be fitted with a full size radio system integrated into the switchgear. The radio had its own power supply direct from the battery with cable in the region of 4mm thick so potentially 50amps+ capable.

The reg rec blew last week and during testing with several different new ones has given some interesting readings.

At idle the bike produces 15v+ regardless of what is switched on.
At 5000rpm the bike produces 14.6-14.85v+ with the headlight on dropping to about 14.2-14.65v with the passlight also on.

AC direct from the generator is within expected range, just below 60v ac on all phases.

So does it have an over rated generator or is something else going on to give high readings?

Incidently I know its ok as I've driven over 300 miles this weekend.

Is it still a 3-phase alternator?

My best guess is that the reg/rec is the wrong one. Normal r/r with 3 shunts to handle 3 phase power coming in. If it's a 4 phase alternator then I could see that making the r/r run a bit quick and chuck out too much voltage.

Yes standard 3 phase.

Correct RR. Tried both the pre-finned and the later more reliable finned type and both give pretty much the same results.

AFAIK the stock NTV650 uses a G8 stator which is used widely
(my bike has one)
I'm still using a Shindengen regulator from the early 80s but I always
strap the black sense wire to the battery pos terminal and get no overvoltage problems.
It regulates at 14.2v ish and drops a wee bit when lights and electric fan kick run at the same time but only to 13.9V ish

If your RR has an external sense wire you could try that to see if it drops a bit.
If it's an internal sensing type check the grounding from RR to battery neg/frame

Its a Deauville not an NTV but pretty much the same. Electrex for example claim the same part no. for both. Supposedly the NT produces less power than the NTV

It uses a Shindengen SH663-12 which is different from the NTV type

It doesn't, five wire only as well as earthed through the frame mount.

Already replaced with a seperate lead. Measures in at less then 0.2v. Seems to be 0.12v. The live measures the same.

Every reading is within the expected tolerance except the actual voltage output.
