These seem to be coming far to frequent for my liking at the moment
Tonight on my way to the office, I was overtaking a car up a hill at about 85, when I heard a loud bang followed by a lack of engine noise. 'Bollocks' thinks me 'this could be bad', I look down and see a cloud of smoke as well and think 'and expensive too!'.
Fortunately the car I was passing saw this going on and slowed dramatically and let me pull over (thanks to him ) and pulled over behind me to see what the problem was and if he could help.
I got off of the bike and looked at it to see oil pissing from the bottom of fairing, then I notice the fact that the chain has snapped and wrapped itself around the front sprocket, totaly smashing the front sproket cover (the bag I guess). Further quick inspection reveals that the rod/spindle thing that the gear leaver attaches to is bent where the chain has pushed it down. This is really going to cost me
So a call to my insurance company reveals I have breakdown cover and a nice chap comes out to take me and the bike home, he also informs me that recovery from my house to the garage of my choice is also covered - so I may see him again
So, why was I lucky?
Well, when I was looking at the damage it occurred to me - the back wheel was covered in oil and if it had happened a mile down the road, it would have been on a fast (90mph) right hander
On the up side (there is always an up side), the damn thing needed an oil change anyway ____________________ I spend all my money on bikes and beer, the rest I simply waste! |

Unlucky, yet lucky.
Sounds like an excuse to trade it in for one of those fancy Benelli things to me. |

What is it with chains snapping this year, at least 5-6 people have had chains snap on them this summer, the guy who did my work is the foreman at lings, and he said hes seen few chains just 'Snap' in 20 years.
If its damaged the crankcase it will be expensive i reckon .
Was it the ZZR or the Benelli? ____________________ is that it |

If it's dumped all your oil I assume it's split the crankcase, or has it just poured out from where the gear linkage got bent. If it's crankcase, the bills not gonna be pretty |

Hi
I would suspect the damage is probably reasonably severe. Not much oil is likely to come out if you have just disturbed the seal on the gear change. If it is crankcase damage then the cases will, probably, need to be split to repair the damage properly.
How old was the chain? Was it the rivit link that failed?
Note that a guy I now mentioned about a year ago that there were quite a few fake DID chains in circulation. He worked in a dealers and they had been supplied chains that had stretched (although not snapped) beyond use in well under 1000 miles on a VFR750.
All the best

Well, I'm sorry to say that the prognosis is very bad indeed.
This is not only a little bit of damage to the crank case - the bloody thing has exploded (at least it looks like it). I'll take some photos once I have the chain off - been at it for two hours so far and not made much of an impression
I've also called my mate at DMA and he reckons probably £1800 worth of damage
