As part of the grand plan, I'd like to add a clock to the dash. Ideally I would like to wire it in, but in order for it not to loose time it would have to be on a permanent live. Would a clock draw enough to flatten the battery, even if the bike was being used every day during the week, or is a clock so low power that it would take months to drain the battery?

What clock?
Why not buy a waterproof watch with a 10 year battery life and stick / velcro it to the bike?

Something like this with the back closed off and all epoxied up for waterproofing.

No watch because:
-a 10 year battery watch with waterproofing will be far more expensive
- the face will be too small to seal myself and too small to see easily when riding
-It will probably get nicked off the bike

Before bikes had clocks I used to buy a cheap digital thing and blue-tac it somewhere in the fairing.

This^+1. I bought a cheap watch at the local market and did exactly that.
Never been a problem and easy to remove Thumbs Up
For me it was £2.99 for the watch and £1 for the bit of sticky Velcro Smile

I have a digital display like that for volts on my boat.

If your battery/system is OK, it will be less drain than an alarm.

They are annoyingly bright at night. If it's in your line of sight it's going to be really distracting.

The watch is a much better idea.

Can't imagine it will draw much and like you mentioned the bike gets regular use.

The cheap digital watch sounds a good idea, only thing that'd bother me is someone nicking it just cause it's there. I don't take thieving very well unless it's a heroic amount of thievery and done with panache. Razz

I've always been a fan of this type - https://www.amazon.co.uk/Shsyue-Universal-Motorcycle-Accessory-Waterproof/dp/B06ZYHNHGL/ref=sr_1_21?ie=UTF8&qid=1498231391&sr=8-21&keywords=bike+clock

But it is just a watch without a strap, but with a handlebar clamp.

It depends on how it's wired. If the digits are on only when the key is in the ON position, then the draw will be minimal (next to nothing, just to keep the time). They say there is a backup battery (CR1220 which is roughly 40mAh, not much), so that gives you an idea of how energy hungry this is, when you don't use it.

My issue with such clock could be visibility in the direct sun light. But, for £2.84 I'd just give it a go.

The LCD wall clock in my workshop has a large screen shows time, date, temperature and the digits are on all the time. It runs for months on two AA batteries. I don't thin you have to worry about any small display running a battery down overnight, or even a weekend, or even a couple of months for that matter.
I suspect that the battery's self-discharge rate would be much higher.
