Rumour going the rounds appears to be true.

I have a paid for account but they have changed their terms of service are reportedly now only going to allow 3rd party hosting from their $300 per year account.

No way I'm migrating the 12Gb of images elsewhere (I have all the originals anyway, I don't overwrite flash memory) so sorry folks, if this turns out to be true, all my images on all my threads are going to disappear.

If this happens, I'm going to look into hosting my images myself. Servers appear to be becoming affordable and my internet connection is now sufficiently quick to make it work.

Does anyone else host their own images? How much of a pain in the arse is it?

If you have shares in photobucket, I'd suggest you sell them now! Their entire customer base is about to disappear.

Subject line in their email made me double take as it mentions my account is restricted for excessive usage. Thought I'd done something wrong for a moment.

Downloaded my photos and closed the account which will take a few days.
Thinking of those touring blogs and forum workshops...

I'll not be trawling through my old posts either.

I run a home web server linked to my YouTube account, it also hosts my wife's charity site.

I'Ve yet to find photo gallery software that works the way I want otherwise it would be doing that also.

That said it's only really shared with friends, and most of the work if done by Google.

It's running on a Pi so nice and light.

Downloading mine would be a nightmare. I have literally HUNDREDS of sub albums and I'd have to request a download for each one.

Thankfully, I don't actually ever delete photos. I keep all the memory cards so the whole archive is still there, just MUCH more badly organised.

Anyone recommend a decent alternative?
It's strange not having a display Picture.

Just been for a look myself, been using for a while, mainly for image linking to here. I HAD the Plus 20 account. Which it looks like will be discontinued and pretty much all accounts are bollocks now.

So Photobucket Middle Finger

I have a server in a datacentre on a gigabit link, time to make my own I guess.

Waiting for the "Where did you go on your bike" and similar threads to crash ....

Probably best to use a less popular one? Seems like the big names are becoming uneconomical to run and going the same way.

This is purely hypothetical as Korn is absent until someone posts a horrifically NSFW pic but the solution has to be something involving images uploaded to BCF in the bike related sections not being deleted after however long it currently is that they get removed if they've not been viewed.

That's the only way to be sure that photos in how-to workshop guides and other bike related threats will still be working in five or ten years.

I'm currently hosting on a Raspberry Pi Prolespec Edition using lighttpd. You can buy a domain and direct it to your server using 1337 5cr1ptz, or plenty of free DNS services are available, e.g. https://freedns.afraid.org/

Anyone got a link to a good "idiots guide" (guides) to setting up a home server then hosting my own images?

I've got a plethora of "graveyard" PCs lying around. I'm also not against the idea of using a Pi (for quietness as much as anything). I have a pretty modern and well specced modem/router.

I use linux at home anyway (used debian, mint and ubuntu in the past) although I wouldn't say I'm entirely comfortable with terminal.

In the house, I have a small network racking cabinet with a patch panel, an ethernet switch and a (now pretty old) stand-alone NAS drive I use for backup. The house is wired up with cat5 cabling.

I presume I'm going to need to buy/build a PC, a domain name and invest in a couple of redecent spec hard drives to make this work?

I was looking at Gallery3, has an associated iOS app albeit £1.99, not sure about Android. App is regularly updated, Gallery3 appears to have been abandoned a couple of years ago. Looks quite simple, was going to have a go later.

EDIT: Android app here https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.xotof
iOS https://itunes.apple.com/de/app/igallery3/id757938893?mt=8

Clients Page https://codex.galleryproject.org/Category:Gallery_3:Other_Clients

For me, the uploading from my phone was most important, so would look for something that supports this.

sudo apt-get install lighttpd

Dump whatever you want to serve straight into /var/www

/var/www/stark-fist-of-proctology.jpg will be served as https://www.yourdomain.foo/stark-fist-of-proctology.jpg

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/DynamicDNS

I use https://freedns.afraid.org/

So...

Create an account.

sudo apt-get install ddclient

sudo nano /etc/ddclient.conf

daemon=5m
timeout=10
syslog=no # log update msgs to syslog
ssl=yes
use=web
server=freedns.afraid.org
protocol=freedns
login=YOUR_FREEDNS_LOGIN_NAME
password=YOUR_FREEDNS_PASSWORD
YOUR_FREEDNS_DOMAIN

Although my Virgin Media IP address is for all practical purposes static so I could just update manually.

Thanks Roger.

Whatcha reckon to the following?

One of these, because tidy and convenient: https://cpc.farnell.com/element14/pi-desktop/raspberry-pi-desktop-hatcase/dp/SC1469541?CMP=CPC-ebooks

Containing a Pi 3 B* and one of these:
https://cpc.farnell.com/wd/wd10efrx/hard-drive-red-sata-6gbps-nas/dp/CS23692

Some flavour of linux. Raspbian? Ubuntu MATE?

Set it to backup to my existing stand-alone NAS drive.

Would it be better to actually buy a domain name? I'm just thinking for future proofing. If the DNS service suddenly decide they are no longer in the business of supplying domain names, it would break all links again? I mean who'd have thought PB woudl decide they are no longer in the business of image hosting?

* I have an original Pi that was the subject of waiting lists etc. It's still in the wrapper and I feel like I don't want to open it now.

If you buy a domain you can have your own multiple emails on it too which is a lot handier than btinternet7249 type emais.

It does occurr to me here that PB have, in one fell swoop, broken more of the internet than anything I've encountered before.

There will be innumerable Blogs, webpages and forum posts which will have been rendered redundant practically overnight because while they are historically a bit of a pain in the arse, they are used by an awful lot of people.

I post extensive and picture heavy blogs about canoeing trips I've done. They are all hosted on PB. They will all break. There are over 100 individual sub albums in my PB just on canoeing. Each of which corresponds to a blog. It would take hours even to just request the downloads for them.

Eh, I just use a Pi and a USB HDD, no case required.

Raspbian is fine, it's just Debian with some tweaks. apt-get is all you're really after.

I have a domain but I only use it for email because of... secrecy jurisdiction. My domain provider's DNS tools are also rubbish, so it's actually easier to use freedns.

Being able to create an infinite number of:

unique_sender_name@mydomain.foo

email addresses is an Allahsend, as it allows better spam blocking, and reveals who's been selling my contact details - I'm looking at you, Motorcycle Direct.

Any speculation as to why some PB photo's have disappeared and others haven't?
From what I can see all mine appear, in my show and tell thread, I can see other peoples stuff linked from PB, yet others have gone.

For years, I've used no-ip dynamic dns, and jAlbum free version, Apache, and, for just chucking things up, also, I use Single File PHP Gallery

https://sye.dk/sfpg/

It really is a single php file in your server root directory..
