in that case, one (or both) of your brakes is/are seized.

Or you've really overfilled it.

How much oil did you put in, did you change the filter?

That would work the other way around. Meaning, the 1st gear is the easiest gear for the engine to spin the rear wheel. The top gear being the harders one. This is also a simple clutch test when buying a used motorcycle/car. Ride it at about 35mph in the top gear and fully open the throttle. If the clutch is already too worn, it will slip. If the clutch is alright, the engine will struggle to accelerate the motorcycle. Thumbs Up

If the clutch slips in the 1st, or even 2nd/3rd, gear, then there's something terribly wrong with it.

Have you put car oil in a wet sump clutch, assuming bike is a wet sump. Well the moly etc is doing it job letting your clutch slip, or you have overcooked with oil. One is easy to sort the other new clutch plates might be on order.

I take it you meant to ask if he/she had put fully synthetic with friction modifiers in? They could potentially fuck a wet clutch.

Oil is oil is oil. Don't spout that 'car oil' crap.

This might be the language barrier, but from ''it was like pulling away in 3rd instead of first'', I get the motorcycle doesn't seem to be performing well, lacking power. He/she/it doesn't even mention a clutch slip.

Went out the day s when it got really warm it began to slip so thought had too much oil in it so drained some out and it was just the same so then I noticed clutch cable slack so thought if I tightened it that would do it but it made it worse so then I slackened cable right off until I had 10mm free play on the lever and that made it hell of lot better but still got a slip

Urgh. We mean, what brand of oil?

If it was running fine before you changed the oil, and all you did was to change the oil, then it's very likely to be the oil.

If you did other things as well, please don't make us play 20 questions to guess them.

It happened on my old YBR. Changed oil for something that purported to be JASO2 MA, and entered clutch clip hell. Changed it back out and it was back to normal. There was a thread about it, that's why people are asking, car oils are not recommended for use in a bike with good reason, they use seperate gearbox oil, so use friction modifiers to make the oil more "slippery", which in a bike, makes your clutch slip as in almost all bikes, the engine and gearbox oil are one and the same.

Overfilling, even with the right oil, can also have a dragging effect, but you are more likely to notice it being a bastard to change gear.

You know what, it's a litre, it's not even worth trying to drag this out of you. Go and buy whatever 10W40 is cheapest at your local ASDA or Tesco, and change it again. Not £1 shop, not synthetic, nothing expensive. You'll be right.

Roll up, roll up, place your bets.

I'd go with a sticky, perhaps frayed clutch cable, or a sticky actuator arm.
