Silencer length and givi boxes on a bandit + marketing blurb

So my OEM exhaust has rusted through and blown out at the collector box, so it's time for some aftermarket stainless steel.

I've got givi boxes on the back and the OEM can exits just behind my luggage, aftermarket parts look like they will be about 100mm shorter, so the end of the pipe is likely underneath the back inside corner of my luggage. Do i need to worry about melting it?

Also both delkevic and black widow are both making nebulous claims about an extra 6 horsepower, but delkevic's dyno compares a 70bhp 'stock' bike to a 76.74bhp modified bike. This is still less than the manufacturer's claimed 78, black widow are proper nebulous and only make non-specific references to an article in performance bikes.

My insurers are being pissy as both items claim more than a 5% improvement on my errm, sportsbike, citing the principle of "it says so on their website so it must be true" How do I deal with this minefield?

1. Buy some stainless pipe on ebay
2. Cut rotten out mild steel sections on the collector box & link pipe
3. Weld nice new stainless pipe on
4. Re-install stock pipe

Yes its big and ugly and sounds crap, but it works with your luggage, insurance, and fueling.
I would bet that the claimed 5% isn't noticeable.

Melting issues can be avoided with adding foil cladding or heat resistant "stuff" to the potentially affected areas.

Any horsepower claim from companies selling bolt on performance parts are likely to claim the power increase attainable with the correct fuelling and other associated adjustments needed for different air flow mass and velocity.

I have a K+N and a full Delkevic system on my CBR and the carbs are at standard fuelling. It wouldn't surprise me if I was actually down on power as opposed to an increase. But it goes fast enough to put a smile on my face and still returns 40mpg on a bad day so fuck it... Dynojet kit will be considered when my bank balance is obliging.

EDIT: Don't tell insurers. What's the point?

What's the length of the stock can? I'm sure Delkevic and Black Widow do a 450mm can which is pretty long. They also do them with a slight turn down at the exit.

Yeah don't tell insurers. It was already on the bike when you got it wasn't it.

I got it all lined up. Stock can is about 500mm. Black Widow were really helpful and sent me photos of the systems I was looking at fitted to a bandit. They are now on their website. The black widow exhausts don't rise as high as the OEM, but they don't have any 450mm in stock. I've gone for a 400mm oval which looks like it's going to finish well away from my luggage. It looks more in proportion to the rest of the bike than the OEM monstrosity and doesn't look like a short/loud/race exhaust.

Having made the mistake of asking the insurers, when they finally got back to me it looks like the underwriters aren't bothered as long as they know, which was what they told me when i bought my policy. At which point principal get marked down for being inefficient, but have actually been good to their word about minor modifications.

I told insurers for two of my bikes about the aftermarket pipes, and said they were replacements for corroded systems not to enhance performance. One is a Black Widow pipe. Neither insurance gave a fuck about the pipes.
