What a character!
An example of Patton's sarcastic wit was broadcast when he received orders to by-pass Trier, as it had been decided that four divisions would be needed to capture it. When the message arrived, Trier had already fallen. Patton rather caustically replied: "Have taken Trier with two divisions. Do you want me to give it back?" ____________________ NSR125RR - ZXR750H1 - ZX9R E1 - GSF600S - GSF600SK3 - VFR400-NC30 - SV1000N - ST1100-R - CBR900RR-R - GSF1200SK5 - GSF600SK1 - VFR1200FA - GSXR1000K2 - ZZR1400 D8F

So much for not doing much today! Started with the Susten/Furka/Grimsel loop, about 70 miles I think. Good riding, many hairpins but a lot of nice twisty stuff too. Roads generally in excellent repair except for one stretch climbing the Furka pass, was a bit patchy and bumpy. Weather was pretty good, had some nice warm sunshine, mixed with a few spits and spots of rain, but the roads never got wet, despite the clouds sometimes looking quite ominous. No thunder storms as predicted thankfully.
Photos then:

Decided it was too early to quit after that, so headed for Grindelwald.

I don't know all the mountains by sight down here; you have the Eiger, Jungfrau, Finsteraarhorn etc, But don't know which I was looking at (edit: since identified as the Jungfrau, 4158m (13,642ft)):

Unfortunately, just as I arrived at Grindelwald, all the most spectacular ones hid behind cloud
Then rode the short distance to Lauterbrunnen:

Good that you gave up on the stupid trees and we are back to the good old mountain pictures like in the Picos report. |
Except that the roads made for better riding in the Black Forest. If you weren't interested in scenery, that's where I'd head for rather than Switzerland, no question. But I take it you can tell I love the mountains too!
Although to be fair, there are some very picturesque places "im Schwarzwald", and the scenery may have seemed better on a sunnier day. Some of the hills are at least as high as anything we have in the U.K.
A beautiful sunny day here as I type this. Nufenen pass today (assuming all goes to plan). ____________________ Chickenystripgeezer's Biking Life (Latest update 19/10/18) Belgium, France, Italy, Austria tour 2016 Picos de Europa, Pyrenees and French Alps tour 2017 Scotland Trip 1, now with BONUS FEATURE edit, 5/10/19, on page 2 Scotland Trip 2 Luxembourg, Black Forest, Switzerland, Vosges Trip 2017

Last I was there was in a car, I imagine some of the hairpins are a bit narrow and tight to be particularly fun on a bike! |
The hairpins are something I'm starting to get the knack for. They're not particularly narrow, but I was cocking them up a lot at first. If there is anywhere you really need to relax your grip on the bars, it's on these hairpins! The faster cars were leaving me on them, but today it clicked a bit I think, and I no longer need be embarrassed!
Tdibs wrote: | Every time I see a picture of your modded fazer1000 I want one... What sort of fuel range are you getting with it? |
If you take it really carefully, you can see 200 miles to a tank before the fuel light comes on. Someone on the Fazer forum reckoned they once got 270 miles, but he got ripped to bits for it
I always fill up at about the 130 mile mark, that's with mixed fast and slow riding. I have never measured it, and I don't care to. By 130 miles, I certainly need a break, so I'm not one of these guys that has to squeeze every last drop in at a refuel either.
I saw 3 of them within 1/4 of a mile out here this morning, and several more through the day - certainly are a popular choice to tour on still. ____________________ Chickenystripgeezer's Biking Life (Latest update 19/10/18) Belgium, France, Italy, Austria tour 2016 Picos de Europa, Pyrenees and French Alps tour 2017 Scotland Trip 1, now with BONUS FEATURE edit, 5/10/19, on page 2 Scotland Trip 2 Luxembourg, Black Forest, Switzerland, Vosges Trip 2017

Things did go according to plan today Although it turns out the plan wasn't entirely great, but that's what you get for exploring I guess.
Started with the Grimsel and Furka passes again, but in the opposite direction (the Grimsel is literally just up the road from my hotel).
First stop for morning coffee, top of the Grimsel:
https://i.postimg.cc/ZKDmDLyb/DSCN0186.jpg
If you're going to see a high concentration of supercars anywhere, actually being driven on the roads, I guess it's logical it'd be somewhere like this - that Lambo ^ actually sounded really nice too, not like a lot of these modern ones which seem to have an artificially muted exhaust note.
It's one of the things I'm loving out here. Supercars from different eras, and bikes too. For e.g., just before I took that shot, a nice Laverda 750 pulled out of the car park.
https://i.postimg.cc/W1zJZS00/DSCN0191.jpg
I didn't stop much for scenery on those two passes today, but had a ball just caning it along the mountain roads, which were fairly empty, it being mid-week
Then it was along by the St. Gotthard pass (meh), and then the day's highlight, the Nufenen Pass. Which actually has been one of the top highlights of the entire trip so far. The road surface wasn't the best, being a bit bumpy in places, but never really bad enough that I had to back off the pace, but this one just flowed, and I really got a shift on to the top of the pass
At the top:

https://i.postimg.cc/PJ961NPj/DSCN0221.jpg
Today was brilliant for mountain photography, with the changeable light. Wait a few seconds and it all looks different again. Hard to choose which photos to post if I'm to keep this fairly brief, hard to pick favourites, so this is just a random choice:

At the bottom of the other side:
https://i.postimg.cc/9fCLd6Fr/DSCN0227.jpg
From what I could tell, Biker Point seemed to be just a hotel
Then I decided to head towards Zermatt. My motivation is that I wanted to see if I could get a good view of the Matterhorn. I knew I wouldn't be able to ride all the way to Zermatt itself; the road is closed to vehicles from Tasch, and you have to take the train for the last bit, which I wasn't going to do. But I just thought I'd go and see what views I could get. I shouldn't have bothered
It was a long, slow, hot ride (29deg) along the valley floor, never getting much over 50mph, and the sum total of the reward was a handful of not great views:
https://i.postimg.cc/xCFgSqGz/DSCN0230.jpg
https://i.postimg.cc/NGKv2HzZ/DSCN0235.jpg
Nice roundabout though:
https://i.postimg.cc/fTX4BhZK/DSCN0237.jpg
Then the same route back, only relieved by another traverse of the Grimsel Pass at the end. Not a bad day all told though. ____________________ Chickenystripgeezer's Biking Life (Latest update 19/10/18) Belgium, France, Italy, Austria tour 2016 Picos de Europa, Pyrenees and French Alps tour 2017 Scotland Trip 1, now with BONUS FEATURE edit, 5/10/19, on page 2 Scotland Trip 2 Luxembourg, Black Forest, Switzerland, Vosges Trip 2017

Couldn't do it, had to do something.
I have felt curiously listless today - until I got on the bike and started riding! Just did the same passes really; Grimsel, Nufenen, Furka, Susten. Tbh, you don't need to see or do anything else here. Add beer and food in the evening, perfection!
Guess what's coming next?
Mountains! Well, what else can you snap around here?
First off, on the Nufenen Pass yesterday, there was this one mountain that refused to reveal itself from behind the clouds, but I could tell it was a big one. Today, it shyly showed just it's summit tip:
https://i.postimg.cc/Kjsmh74y/DSCN0251.jpg
Clearly, it stands head and shoulders above everything else for miles around - wonder what one it is? (Edit: since identified as the Finsteraarhorn, 4274m (14,022ft)).
This is the Grimsel Pass road, seen from the start of the Furka Pass road:

Taken from the same place, but looking along the Furka Pass road:

The same highest summit, seen from up on the Furka:

You can see how much it dominates the landscape from this shot:

And a few more shots from the day:

It's amazing what scenery you ignore after a while here. Stuff that at home you'd stand and gawp at just gets a "meh" here, so much is so spectacular. Switzerland, as you probably know, is a hellishly expensive place to visit, but if you can only do it once, I'd highly recommend you do.
The photo "shoots" today were interspersed with lazy coffee stops, breaks to just stand and stare at everything around, and a few moments spent replacing a fubared headlamp bulb (the replacement for which was also ridiculously expensive - don't be lazy like me, bring one with you!).
A very enjoyable last day here im Schweiz. ____________________ Chickenystripgeezer's Biking Life (Latest update 19/10/18) Belgium, France, Italy, Austria tour 2016 Picos de Europa, Pyrenees and French Alps tour 2017 Scotland Trip 1, now with BONUS FEATURE edit, 5/10/19, on page 2 Scotland Trip 2 Luxembourg, Black Forest, Switzerland, Vosges Trip 2017

Decided to call it quits now. Actually, my bank balance decided for me
Plan is, to Metz via the Route des Cretes tomorrow, Calais and the chunnel the following evening. Overnight in Dover, then home. Shorter trip than I would have liked, but don't want to get home completely skint. It has been well worth it! ____________________ Chickenystripgeezer's Biking Life (Latest update 19/10/18) Belgium, France, Italy, Austria tour 2016 Picos de Europa, Pyrenees and French Alps tour 2017 Scotland Trip 1, now with BONUS FEATURE edit, 5/10/19, on page 2 Scotland Trip 2 Luxembourg, Black Forest, Switzerland, Vosges Trip 2017

Meantime, we're trying to get a weather window for a wee day sortie over to the west coast - Ullapool, Gairloch etc..... |
You could do the Grimsel, Furka, Susten and Nufenen passes in one long day if you wanted to, but I'd have been happy riding them for a couple more days than the three I had as long as the weather remained good, and you want to be able to take the time to savour them. The ride down to Grindelwald and Lauterbrunnen I thought was worth it, Tasch (nearest by road to Zermatt) was not.
Ah, Italy! One day, one day! Still my favourite of Europe.
In Metz tonight, had a quick turn around the city centre - lovely place, very lively cafe culture.
@ Kris; I won't post up any pics from the Vosges and Route des Cretes, as you're headed there and might not want to see spoilers.
