Your forks are liable to fall apart and murder-kill you, like the head-shake that murder-killed Kevin Ash. But don't fret: it's not a recall, it's just a "service campaign".

If you're deaded, BMW might fix your bike for you.

They never admitted to the fatal head-shake either, they just fitted a steering damper for no reason at all.

BMWs should come with some remote activated dash lights:

Recall for fatal design flaw.
"Service campaign" for fatal design flaw.
New model available to purchase, with different fatal design flaws.

I'd stress that mine has been fine, both as a model and an example. They seem to save their real comedy fails for their flagship models.

I like the look of a few BMW bikes, but the dealers and parts prices seem shite.

Reliability is dreadful as well.

I haven't found any reason to get rid of my midi-GS, which is handy since they're surprisingly difficult to shift. Folk do seem to prefer the ones that will kill you.

They do seem to hold their value surprisingly well.
It's about the only Munich Tractor I've ever been interested in, but they've been a bit too expensive when I've been in a position to look...

Yup, no complaints about mine.

Dealer asking prices are not what they're selling for privately in auctions though. You'll find plenty that don't shift, or get relisted too.

I don't remember the olde worlde R1100GS having any of these death kill issues. It just plodded along as a sensible slightly leftfield bike.
Since then they seem to have gone on steroids and developed all sorts of problems.

Over triple the failure rate of Suzuki, Yamaha and Honda. (And almost Kawasaki too).

That is one reason why I would never consider a BMW as a commuter bike.

The 800s are generally fine. The 650s were OK until they started making the engines in Chinesey land, but they've discontinued them now.

It's primarily the 1200s that are scattering parts of themselves and/or their riders down the road, with an occasional death-kill from the 1300 and 1600s.

Most owners buy (well, rent) a 1200 though.

I've owned a 2017 Rallye GS since 24th April. Hasn't tried to kill me yet, unlike my Ducati Streetfighter. Lots of recalls but then they sell many many bikes with over 2000 sold in 2016.

Many faults per bike x many bikes with faults = not sure that's really the best way to excuse them.

Fake news. Every GS rider had one before Long Way Round was made, plus they've never even heard of it. Tut Tut

I'm sure I read somewhere that Dakars pre 05 or something were prone to shedding their forks for fun too.

Ah, found it...

Not-a-recall for the non-existent issue is now a recall. Whistle

I looked out for ages for a believable report on the death of Kevin Ash, was this fork problem found to be it or just the most likely ?.

Lawyers panicking about in all directions and a very determined 'muddying of the waters' by BMW but I've no doubt an agreement (a very expensive one) has been made with a proviso of 'keeping one's mouth shut' clause was offered and accepted.

Either way, the upshot was that BMW denied there was a head-shake problem, and then fitted a steering damper to fix the head-shake problem that the bike didn't have. So, lying then, lying now, choose your adventure.

Doesn't seem so bad, it's mostly the 1200GS that they can't stop tinkering with until it breaks.
