I would imagine the thread is just worn out. OP does 42 billion miles a year, and is keen on preventative routine maintenance; so it's probably on its 66,000th set of plugs by now.

Should be good, you'll leave the same gaping hole regardless of which end you screw it in.

Do I need a tap wrench for the tap to cut the new threads?

As you can see the cylinder walls are in the way so vice grips/mole grips won't work or can I simply flip the head and go in from the other side?

Ideally get the TAP tool - you will use it more than once and it will help to get the TAP in 'square'. Not 100% sure going in from the other end is a good idea as you might end up backing the insert out -
once fitted. Also inserts in kits are usually quite short..

I've been putting off doing this for the side stand on my track bike (previous owner put 10'ish mm bolts in 28mm bolt holes, in an ali frame, for a side stand...
Only noticed when it was leaning at 40 degree angle one day on the stand. Both holes shagged, Helicoil kit bought, hoping the holes are't to ovaled. Could a heli coil in a heli coil work?

Need to get the rear suspension out to get in there though :-\

Helicoil in a helicoil not a good idea but there are thread inserts with a bigger external thread relative to the internal thread. What size is the bolt and how much 'meat' is there around the hole(s)?

I would have gone with a solid collar insert for a spark plug because you screw it onto the plug first then into the hole but fair play, you've done it the harder way so well done.

Well done Fazer - good job there. Helicoils are good but accuracy needed when tapping for them.

Cleaning the workpiece before commencing would have been a good idea though, this is a piece of precision engineering not some dirty one night stand.

I once broke down because a bolt rattled out of the LHS hangar on a divvy 600. I had nothing with me apart from a 10mm spanner and a multitool, and the token biker first aid kit.

I ended up using a fairing bolt wrapped in bandage to wedge it in place to get me home (and another 500 miles until it came out to remind me to replace both bolts)
