They need to go away and be replaced with very small shell scripts.

Oh look, the Unions are destroying another industry, there's a surprise. Shocked

On the plus side, they're making a good case for driverless trains.

Well done in the sense that this will hasten the removal of human train drivers from passenger services? I agree.

The thought that we're gung-ho for having driverless cars on the road while we still insist on having spam-in-a-can mashing the "ignore red light" button in the front of trains is just baffling.

Purely on safety grounds, all passenger trains and trams should have been made driverless years ago while in normal service.

I agree, although start on 'enclosed systems', in a similar way to the docklands light railway, other obvious enclosed systems would include London Underground, Glasgow underground, large sections of the Merseyrail 3rd rail network, Tyne & Wear Metro .. etc, as they make for sensible options for driverless trains. Although, some form of on board staff should be retained, to help those with mobility issues etc.

Oh, and MPD, were you born angry??

The middle class will just pay the increased fares, claiming their tax deductions no doubt. The working class will suffer a treat.

It would be a lovely notion that all non-skilled sit-on-arse-push-button jobs could support incredulous wage structures but that notion ignores the elephantiasis of who is willing to pay for it.

Stop being racist. If everyone gets paid loads, everybody will be rich and we'll all live in mansions with butlers.

Rich butlers who live in mansions with butlers.

This industrial action is not about more money, it's about safety and I'm sure all drivers want less pay but a safer railway.

Exactly, listen to the drivers, they don't want £60-75 thousand pound salaries, they want safety.

its one thing trundling about driverless in a big city at 30 mph with relief/emergency services just minutes away, but fan covered in shit at125mph in remotest northumberland is another matter? wouldn't it be nice to have 'someone' on board in this situation ? i quite like the idea of someone driving a train who is not on minimum wage and doesn't give a toss about the job. this thread is just shed loads of jealousy, good luck to them.

fwiw, I know a train driver. He seems to have an endless list of anecdotal evidence where work has been avoided, because of spurious reasons which essentially centre on the whole industry having this endemic "I'm going to milk the system" attitude. They try to get away with zero work if at all possible, but if it is possible, they'll ream it for the maximum time back or (and) cash payment.

I don't hate the players, I hate the game. And in this case, it's the unions being unions. If you were to ask each train driver individually the question "will you take £75k in pay, while you can, because it's not long before a robot does your job", you'd get a load of 'yessirs'. Ask them all via the unions, you get shown the door.

Increasing pay doesn't automatically increase feelings of responsibility or pride; and it's not as if they've ever been on minimum wage or anywhere near it.

The issue isn't one of jealousy it's one of realism. Drivers demanding increased wages increase rail fares as a result. This is Southern Rail we're talking about here. The service is already ridiculously expensive to the point of laughable, and is one of the least (if not the least) punctual service on the whole of the network. I get it, that most of the problem sits with the board, but that doesn't excuse industrial action over pay, creating misery for thousands of people just trying to get to work and back every day, to justify your frankly ridiculous wage demands for a job which isn't highly skilled or specialist, doesn't generally attract graduate and above level applicants, and isn't grinding those within the industry to paste in 10 years because of its hardship.
