So my FZS broke down Monday morning. I have spent all week between working trying to work out why without luck.
On Monday morning it fired up but died straight away tried to start it again but it just kept turning over and not catching on I assumed the battery was weak and tried to bump it but it wasn't happening.
Pushed it back to the garage to diagnose the problem.
Checked battery voltage 13.2V which rules that out.
Checked it is getting fuel by draining a float bowl fuel came out so I assume it is getting fuel.
Checked no hoses were kinked.
Checked all the fuses. Fan fuse was shot so replaced it I doubt this was the problem though.
Pulled the plugs which were wet not sure if it was petrol or oil.
Tried fresh plugs and checked it is getting a spark which it is.
Which leaves compression which I suspect is the problem I don't have a tester so I screwed up a bit of paper and placed it in the plug holes and cranked the engine it blows the paper out. I know this doesn't prove anything but it is getting some compression at least.
Note - When I last had the head off I didn't bother with a new head gasket I was cheap and used copper gasket spray not something I will repeat. Saying that there were no visible leaks around the cylinder head when it was last running.
Could it have lost compression over night? I did around 8 miles hooning around on Sunday night it was running OK but not great was due new plugs and a service so I thought this was why.
So any ideas? Before I just buy another engine.
I've spent this morning clearing all the shite out of the workshop and rearranging things ready for an engine transplant.

I can't be bothered taking the head off the current engine again. Given the fact it has done 70K and the 2nd gear shit its self about 6 months ago a replacement engine would be the cheapest most reliable solution. |

Yet another idea, how do your spark plug caps look? Any cracks, rust inside...? Cracks would let the spark jump/arch to the engine; rust isn't a good conductor.
I would also try to find any loose connection under the tank, you've had quite an adventure under there.
If it's carbureted, unplug the feed hose and fill the carbs via that.
If it's DFi, do as lads say, spray some ether (starter spray) into the airbox/intake.
Next thing to do would be the compression test.
As it ran before, I won't question your ability to do the valve clearances (you had the head off, you could have mixed up the shims) ____________________ '87 Honda XBR 500, '96 Kawasaki ZX7R P1, '90 Honda CB-1, '88 Kawasaki GPz550, MZ 150 ETZ

Oh, that doesn't sound good..... I've had a couple of engines that sounded like that in the past and sorted them. I COULD tell you what I done to sort them, but because you're a wee c**t I'll let you figure it out on your own (or when someone tells you, ya ungrateful little shit) |
