To do the test I gave the fitting a dab of grease for a good fit and held the throttle wide open until the needle stopped going up on the gauge.

Haynes specs is 170psi minimum doesn't say if it's a cold or hot engine.

Battery reading was 13.04V at the time of the test. It has been on charge two days.

So what is the most likely cause for such low readings on all four cylinders?

your engine is cold.. ideally it should be done on a warm/hot engine.

Pour a teaspoon of engine oil down the plug holes and run the compression test again to see if it changes

At least they are all in the same range i recon its that shite head gasket

With a bit of fresh 10/40 down the plug holes it changed the results significantly.

Head gasket failure it is. My bodged head gasket didn't work as planned.

the oil trick will usually show up worn piston rings on a cold engine.. if the compression was still low with oil i would have said a stuck valve/HG.

Given what you've told us and the fact it WAS running on the current rings AND you bodged the head gasket, that's the first thing i would correct

Two options now I can get another engine for 200quid which has done 50K alternatively I could take the head off and replace the head gasket.


My only reservations about replacing the engine are that it looks a very tight squeeze to get in and out of the frame then again a fully functioning 2nd gear would be nice.

What would you do replace engine or the head gasket?

For the £30-£50 for a gasket + some misc parts, thats the easiest way out.. just my 2p though. Swapping engines can do one especially as you can never guarantee its not a dud

More important is if it holds pressure. Find where the leak is going, get cylinder to TDC, if it holds 100 or 200psi, no problem. If it leaks, listen to intake, exhaust, crankcase breather and coolant to find where from.

You can use the plug end of your tester, connect it to compressed air/foot pump.

I have decided to fit a replacement engine. May sound like a drastic measure to some but I'm fucked off with crawling around on the floor with limited light and space trying to work out what the fuck I'm looking at.

So this morning I preped it for engine extraction.

All was going well apart from a couple of radiator hoses I had to snap to get off.

When it came to lifting the engine out of the frame the oil cooler was catching it preventing it coming out. I required a 30mm socket to remove it which of course I didn't have.

So I went to Halfords.

Removed oil cooler and the engine was free to come out.

Did you try starting the bike after putting oil on the pistons?

Should have started with the better PSI readings.

The box eye fazer was one of the worst engines swaps I've ever done, mainly just getting the fucker in and out of the frame!

I had bought a 50 quid engine on a whim to replace mine, in the end it turned out to pull alot harder than the old engine.

Replacement engine arrived this morning.

I wasted no time in unpacking.

Had two broken exhaust studs to remove.

Replaced the plugs.

Robbed the starter motor from the original engine and a few other bits.

Got it in the frame which wasn't as hard as I had feared.

Plugging everything back in the loom I noticed one of the wires for the oil level sensor/neutral switch is severed not sure which yet. Fucker.
