I only recently used askmid just to check my insurance was showing active and noticed there is a data protection warning saying you must be the owner of the vehicle etc.

I see no such warnings when checking my vehicles tax.
Is this a derp of gov.uk and they merely don't warn people not to check other vehicles?
Then again, there are only a few reasons I can think of that anybody would want to.

Or is there some reason vehicle tax status doesn't fall under DPA?

Put another way, is there a reason it /should/ come under DPA?

The tax status of a vehicle used to be there for all to see on the windscreen/holder. The online lookup gives no personally identifying details. Why should DPA be involved?

Fair point, however I would argue the same of askmid, I don't understand how either of them fall under DPA tbh.
It also shows nothing personal about me, just "Yes this vehicle is insured today". Thinking

Data which identifies an individual, even without a name associated with it, may be personal data where it is processed to learn or record something about that individual, or where the processing of that information has an impact upon that individual.

If you were asking about whether an individual was insured, I could see an issue.

Since it's about the vehicle, and all vehicles with a VRM (with a very few exceptions) should be insured all the time anyway, it seems like unnecessary flapping and squawking at the behest of a lawyer who felt that they had to find a problem to justify their pay.

Technically speaking, you're not even asking about a vehicle: you're asking whether a vehicle registration mark has insurance associated with it.

Since the DVLA can revoke those on a whim, and all transfers of "ownership" have to be done via them, I'd argue that they're not actually owned by individuals anyway.

I've thought the same. They used to ask for the v5c number for MoT history. I see that as information that should be available. Vehicle information (tax etc.) and MID I can see why you might need that info', but it can be open to abuse. If you're buying a vehicle (you plan to drive) you should be taxing or taking out insurance straight away.

The existence of VRM plates enables the cloning of VRM plates. Best get rid of them, can't be too careful.
