It's "New keeper's details" now, got one sitting in front of me.

Piece of cake
5 mins online on a laptop
15 mins later checked my emails and there was an acknowledgement email with a ref number and my new v5 will be sent to me in 2 weeks
No hassle for seller posting etc no wondering on buyers part if seller has done it
Very pleased and pleasantly surprised that the gov.uk got this one right

Used it three times now. Email is all but instant and the V5 arrives about a week later.

It's a really good system, but worth pointing out it has 'opening times' from 7am to 7pm, so no use outwith those times.

I like it as it means you can fill in a receipt, then change the owner and then tax the car in your name before you drive it away. Provided the PO has valid insurance for the tax to check against you can then dayinsure it and drive it home.

Doesn't even need that anymore.

Do they not still check MOT and insurance when you tax a vehicle?

They've deliberately stopped doing it the basis that they want the VED money now, and then they'll be able to blackmail us for more later.

In law, 'Keeper' is not necessarily the same as 'Owner' and as it says in big letters, on the front of a V5C (and as posted above) "THIS DOCUMENT IS NOT PROOF OF OWNERSHIP, it shows who is responsible for registering and taxing the vehicle".

They have changed the wording now, but IIRC the green part (V5C/2) used to be called the 'new keeper's supplement' - nothing at all to do with ownership.[/quote]

Exactly this,

I paid for my wife's car, finance is in my name, she is registered keeper, vehicle is insured on my policy with her as named driver.

Technically I own the vehicle but she is liable for any issues regarding using it on the road.

The cynic in me thinks that part of the reason that the police no longer routinely investigate vehicle theft and burglary is that the goods involved technically belong to nobody. Why should the police (in their own lazy reasoning) care who is the particular current custodian of a commercial good, just as long as some mug has already pre-paid the rent ticket on it?
