Todays kids would try and weaponise a kit like that. They would try and make meth or splash acid for their beef attacks and moped thefts.

I didn't say lego as a 'childhood' thing... as I never really stopped.

Recently built the Orange porsche, The volvo digger and a merc lorry.

They are so overpriced, especially older models. Even recently discontinued models fetch 2x the original price. I'd like to build the 4X4 Crawler (9398) but new it's nearly £300 and used it's around £200. Shocked

Yeah, I find building Lego good stress relief, and my 4 year old girl likes to help (although she only lasts abut 5 minutes before getting bored). Sold off some of my City sets, mainly focussed on Star Wars sets

Yeah, had the Grandstand one as well. I think mine had football as well which was 2 player. Always wanted the gun, which was separate, but never got it Sad

Mate, nothing to be embarrassed about, perfect excuse to get the Lego out. Had the same recommended to me before!

I remember probably my lego pinnacle!

I used to build the technical models and things like cars and trucks with the exposed engines and working gearboxs etc. I then always wanted to power them with a lego electric motor set. There was a buggy thing with a flat four boxer engine that I tried to fit the motor on top of to look like a supercharger. The tiny rubber band belt kept snapping so I gave up on that one.

But I built my own 4wd jeep thing after with almost all the bits from my masses of lego parts. I had a spare 540 size electric motor from my radio controlled car after I'd upgraded the motor. I made it fit where the passenger seat would be, and cable tied it to the chassis. It had a reduction gear to twin prop shafts driving the front and rear diffs.

I connected it with an extended cable to my Scaletrix 12v transformer and speed controller and used to make an obstacle course for it to climb. Its the only time in my life so far I've ever snapped a drive shaft or broke a diff. Laughing

Other shit I did was build a lego rolling road dyno for my Scaletrix cars, and I used to make geared up drives for lego piston engines and spin them as fast as I could with 12v sent to a lego motor to see if I could make them explode. I guess I've been breaking and fucking things up ever since. Laughing

OMG - I totally forgot about these! I _loved_ those things. Wired remote controls!

Big Trak was f'king fantastic, I spent hours programming that thing.

These were a massive fad in my school - the fidget spinner of my time.

Lego/technics, natch. Meccano - not so much.

Oh, and this:

Making gunpowder Thumbs Up

I remember going in to a chemist for saltpetre and telling the chemist my mother wanted it for pickling. Then another chemist for 'flowers of sulphur'. (If I tried that nowadays the armed response would be after me straight away!)

Home made charcoal and I was well away.

I never really got anything to go bang but the burning was pretty good. Some of my airfix models went up in pretty spectacular style. Laughing

Great days!

When I was 5 and had just started school my favourite toy was just plain and simple Plasticine. I seem to remember I mostly made rockets and gantries from the stuff as the moon landings were being broadcast on the tv at the time.

Our school Plasticine was special. Not only had all the colours thoroughly mixed up over the years to make a muddy brown, it was also strengthened by the simple act of placing strands of hair inside it which only seemed to show up when pulling a bit into two. I think this was done by the same company who provided the old floating plasters in public swimming pools for the council.

my brother had the rocket bike, there was a stone wheel inside and there were lighter flints on springs pressed up against it and it shot a lot of sparks out of the red tubes on the sides when you wound it up, super safe!
