Ouch! Just been bitten on the collar bone by a spider. I think it's a False Widow. Prognosis?

Are venomous spiders common where you live?

No.

From the Natural History Museum site:

"There are over 650 species of spider known to live in the UK. Only around 12 of these are recorded as species that have bitten humans.

So, if you see a spider, the likelihood is that it is just a harmless, common British spider.

False widows are not the deadly spiders they are sometimes thought to be.

Although false widows do have a venomous bite, the venom is not particularly potent. Usually the only symptom is pain at the site which may radiate away from the bite. It ordinarily lasts between one and 12 hours, and rarely for more than 24 hours.

Often, the symptoms are no worse than the pain of a wasp sting."

Hertfordshire isn't known for it.

I must have squished it when I put my hand to the injury. I was in the pub when it bit me though, so it might have died of alcohol poisoning.

It does feel like that, but when I realised what had happened it immediately brought to mind the dreadful abscess a friend suffered after being bitten by a Lace Weaver Spider in Northants.

So the prognosis is, the patient will live although he's just lost 50 man points. Laughing

I think you're all underestimating the geographical nature of the bite. Any time now his shoulders will swell until his head explodes.

Any fool can get bitten to death in Bongo-Bongo Land, but in The Home Counties? I'll be dining out and wooing the ladies with my tale of derring-do and (hopefully) survival for weeks, no?

Some UK ones do bite and it can be similar to a wasp or bee sting which is potentially nasty especially near your neck or airways.
A few more exotic ones can arrive on imported fruit etc - so it isn't a risk to be entirely dismissive of.

Mate of mine got caught that way a few years ago, fortunately he got a good look at it and was able to describe it in detail, even more fortunately there was a bright spark on duty at the hospital and he got the right treatment, but not before there was talk of amputating his arm.

Not really what you expect when you're weed trimming in Maidstone.
