Back then, a lot of it was to do with the potential you saw in personalising a bike I think.

I think the wider, on-display air cooled engines gave a kind of presence to a bike too, especially with IL4s. Also, the lines of front mudguard, tank, side panels and tail piece could carry a colour theme right through from front to back. There was a kind of swoopy elegance that could be achieved. Today, with all these angular lines and little plastic panels tacked on here, there and everywhere, there's no overall shape to a bike's bodywork, so what does it matter if you paint everything matt black? If you try a colour theme, you just have a splash of brightness here, a bit there, but nothing ties together.

At first, I thought, "what is the OP's beef?"
Then I looked at some new bikes over the weekend and found myself starting to agree.
2017 Suzuki GSX range appears to be only available in matt black, with a choice of tiny coloured parts.
Didn't mind it too much myself, and I can see why they do it, but I imagine that if you didn't like black it could be a bit of an issue!

Coincidentally, the Diavel is the only recent bike that I would take pride of ownership in. But not in black. It would have to be in red, and colour-coded afterwards if necessary. |
