In all of your infinite wisdom. What is the best way to tell if the steering / front wheel is out of alignment?

It looks and feels like it is ever so slightly off, and now that I have noticed it, the feeling is exaggerated. And if it is, how hard is this to rectify.

Loosen all bolts bar the ones on the top yoke and bounce down compressing the forks in a few times. Then tighten everything back up from the top down (iirc)

...To quickly re-align the front end.

To check alignment: The String Method.
Alternatively if you have a huge long straight bar (seriously who the hell even has one of these? except scaffolding stealing pikeys), use that instead of the string.

If something feels off and your bike has ever gone down, your handlebars could also be slightly bent.
Also bar end imbalances can be a factor.

Bike hasn't gone down, well not that I know of Its only done 1000 miles, and is in perfect condition. It looks and feels like the front wheel and handle bars, ever so slightly off.

True, but is that plank of wood really trustworthy enough to be a straight edge? Thinking
I'd be concerned of warping or bowing, but maybe I'm over thinking it.

Not if you hold it upright, but should be if flat. You can always check the board with string before using it Smile

Funny for sure, but I can't fault his logic either.

Have you checked the bearings in the steering head?
As a motorcycle spends most of its life going straight ahead, the repeated shocks from the front can wear small indentations in the surfaces the bearings run on. This can make the bike feel like it's trying to run on tracks, or that you're continually crossing road repair joins.
To rule this out, jack the bike up so the front wheel is off the ground, and gently, very gently move from lock to lock, actually, from a couple of degrees either side of straight ahead. If you go millimetre by millimetre past the centre point, and you feel the bars settle slightly, yep, head bearings.

Haynes will tell you to look out for notchiness and stuff, but if you move the bars slowly, and you feel something between one degree either side of straight ahead, their's your culprit

It's a pretty new bike, I doubt it's done much mileage yet.

Thank you for the reply. Insightful and worth remembering for future. As Grr Said, the bike has only done 900 Miles, so not sure this will be the problem just yet, but thanks Smile Thumbs Up
