Evening all.
2004 CBR600f
Oil level?
On the centre stand its above the glass. On the side stand it's under the glass.
Too much? Not enough?
Haynes just says when the bike is level, which I assume means on the centre stand..
Oil light flashed when I start her up, but quickly goes out.

On the main stand, top of the glass. It's probably fine.

Oil level on yours should be checked with engine cold and on level ground with the bike upright,(balanced) the level should be in between the lower (min) and upper (max) line in the plastic glass.

If it's clear over the top of the sight, I'd get a tube down into the sump and remove some. Even if you can't pump your sump, if you shove it in, cover the top with your thumb and then whip it out, you'll get some relief.

Top of the glass /plastic is not fine,
you need to see if the level goes up or down.

The maximum marker for the sight glass on a CBR is at the top of the glass.

I said:

In what way is it not being at the top of the glass not fine? Thinking

RR here, but:

arry, just read what you have posted,
No mention of centre stand and the level is between lower and upper.
As my first post.
Also the level can go up with a faulty injector or coolant leak.

Centre stand = main stand.

Top of the glass = where the max marker is.

I think it's got a bit too much oil in.
I'll syphon a bit out on the weekend. Or do an oil change if I can be arsed.
Thanks all for your help.

I have found that a more reliable way of checking the oil level is to let the engine run for several minutes and after switching the engine off, leave it for about two minutes and then check the level. This is how both KTM and Honda (XR400) explain how to check the levels as stated in the manuals.

A few years ago I was out for a ride with several others. One had a problem with the engine not being too responsive,so we stopped in a quiet village to investigate. When it was noticed that there was oil dripping out under the bike and there was a smear from the oil filler cap,the question was asked if the owner had put any oil in recently. When it was admitted that there was only a small amount left in the oil can so the rest was poured into the sump,we leant the bike over so as to try and ascertain an oil level,as none could be seen in the sight window. With the bike near enough at over 45 degrees,a level was seen.We drained about 500ml from the sump.
The engine ran a lot better Thumbs Up Wink

Nope. The KTM is wet sump, but the manual still states to check the level with the engine warmed up.

The XR400 is dry sump.

To be fair there's no easy route through. My KTM is dry sump and to be checked whilst warm. My Enfield is wet sump and to be checked whilst warm.
