I've seen a few of these cars about quite cheap. Much cheaper than I would normally expect of similar age and condition of Ford, Honda etc. Are they horrifically unreliable or is it just because they went bust a few years ago and there's a scare regarding parts?

What are the diesel engines like? I want something with poke and I'm looking at a TTID but equally if the TID can be remapped for good returns I'd consider that too.

'Posh' Vauxhall. The 900 and 9000 were the last true SAABs. They were built like tanks with high mileage worthy engines.

There's plenty of them hence one of the reasons they're cheap. Plenty of them at high miles available too - they're capable of it.

If you buy a cheap diesel though, think of it as throwaway money. There's a lot that can go wrong that can be fixed but not cheaply.

Cracked bulkheads have killed quite a few of them, and not just the convertibles.

I currently own one, as well as having another 5 9-3s in my friend group, and a couple of the new shape 9-5s.

Before I bought one, I was reluctant about the potential issue of parts availability, but I really shouldn't have worried about this. There's plenty about to get parts from for the 9-3.

Don't touch the new shape 9-5 though. They were only made for a year, so a pain to get bits for.

Over the past 18 months, the only thing that is not usual servicing (oil change, brake discs/pads, caliper overhauls, filter changes etc) have been:

Water in fuel sensor: £20
EGR Blanking: £10
Vaccum hose for brake servo: £25

The things that are needing to be sorted are:

Flywheel and clutch - £350 to do on the driveway
Rusty Arches - Who knows what lies behind that.

The 1.9TiD is the same engine in the vauxhall vectra. It has a suitable amount of pull for a car on the road (I can't see anyone needing more power for the road, except for fun etc).

There is a bit of turbo lag, but that is to be expected (less of a problem on the TTiD).

Common problems with the engines are: swirl flaps sieze, and bar which connecting them comes off.

Gunk in the inlet manifold (blank EGR completely to avoid getting worse).

Water pumps fail, taking the timing belt out with it (completely preventable, think around 40k miles or 4 years would be fine for changing timing belt and water pump.

If I remember correctly, Saab said something like 18k miles, or 2 year oil changes. Fuck that. Go for 1 year and maybe like 6 to 8k miles. Some do sooner.

Front springs can go more often than other cars, but cheap and easy enough to do yourself.

Only other thing is my rear arches are rusting, but then again, you can get issues like that on any car. Also the previous owner was from oban, so close to the sea.

Yup this used to be a problem for the pre-facelift models. There's a modification that will completely prevent this from happening. Tbh though I wouldn't be buying one that is old enough to have this as a potential problem as saab sorted this weakness.

To be honest, I wouldnt' go spending massive money on a 9-3. The aero ones are better, with better suspension. I think £2k is about the maximum I would want to spend on any 9-3 now. Any more and I feel you're better looking at bmw etc.

Yeah definitely capable of high milage. Mine is at 112k at the moment, which isn't super high, although my friends is the same age, and his is at 150k miles.

Hope that helps.

I got 150k out of one with no real drama. DMF was shagged when I sold it though.

Having spent the last 5 years working opposite a SAAB specialist, I wouldn't have a 9-3 as a present and neither would they.

Generally, people specialise in things they love and adore, plus they know all the wrinkles, fixes and sources of cheap parts.

Not one of those boys drives a SAAB, so that might tell you something.

Customer of ours just bought a cheap 9-3 convertible, or it was cheap, until he had to spend another 600 quid putting a few fundamentals right - he called today to say his roof has failed, another few hundred quid down the toilet.

That cheap 9-3 is now an expensive one and he hasn't owned it a month............do you feel lucky?
