Once you can't hear a mosquito buzzing you can save yourself a lot of money.

So, if you're getting on a bit you're buying pretty boxes.

Not necessarily, depends where the hearing loss is, most rock music has little information below 40Hz, and little above 7KHz, given most age related hearing loss is above 9KHz it matters not so much.

Better loudspeakers and ancillaries do provide more information with less distortion, it DOES sound better, but like with all things, price is not an indicator of performance, some expensive stuff does sound great, but some is just old mans jewellery, especially wires and tweaks, pile of nonsense sold to the deluded.

Rule of thumb, if you enjoy music on what you have, and it makes you want to listen to more music, then job jobbed, plenty of people can tell the difference when listening to their favourite music on my system, but it's not important enough for them to invest in a hifi, each to their own, and I can listen to music happily on the bike with earbuds, in the car, on a Bluetooth speaker, and throughly enjoy the music, with the hifi it's just more emmersive, think of it like playing a video game, still a great game when played on your phone, but way better in a 3D simulator.

I love music played on my hifi, but I'm not a snob about it, although I am a bit of a music snob, the main thing is the Music, what I find really weird though are those folk who never listen to music, or say they don't like it, fucking freaks I say Very Happy

^^^You can't cheat age no matter how well you've looked after your hearing.
In other words. Expensive full range speakers are wasted on old affluent fools. Razz
Here's a frequency chart, add a HPF cut at 7k and you'll lose the 'sheen' to pretty much everything recorded since the 70s.
