Hi all,
I have a sound problem.
Until recently i was using a Openbox/Libertytv box which simply connected to my TV via scart cable & subsequently connected to my surround sound system via another scart cable.
Sound was great, no problems.

BUT now I have ditched the TV box because most, if not all, decent channels went down in May & I have replaced it with 1 of those wee box of tricks available from CaNsA(amazing wee things BTW, highly recommended)

But I can't connect via scart cables any longer, as I would have to miss out the wee box & connecting the telly straight to the surround system using a scary cable does nothing.
So, here's a "diagram" of all the sockets on the telly etc
.Can someone assist in telling me how to hook up to DECENT sound again, please?
The sound coming from the TV is almost unbearable, so much so I considered humphing down my massive Demon DVR cinema system from my bedroom.

Heres what I have : on the back of the telly.

Subwoofer out ( )black. Pr ( )Red

Audio in ( )red. Pb ( )blue.

( ) white. Y/video ( )yellow/green

SCART. HDMI 1. HDMI 2. USB. OPTIC OUT

Right that's the telly, if not marked otherwise, they're standard phono sockets.

Then I have one of CaNsA`s box of tricks, connected to the telly with a HDMI cable & only other (AFAIK) relevant output socket is a 3.5mm headphone type socket marked with a pic of a video camera & a speaker iirc.(there's a few other USB sockets)

Now we are onto my surround sound system. Its not my big Denon dvr thing, just a phillips dvd player/surround sound combo with 5 wee speakers & a subwoofer.
I dont really fancy changing it (just to make things easier to connect up together but will consider it, if i really have to)
Simply because it actually sounds bloody good, for the size of the wee speakers its quite impressive.
But the inputs are fairly basic IMHO, here's what it has :

Audio in
White ( ). L. White ( )

Red ( ). R. Red. ( ). Yellow ( ) video

Aux1. Aux2. Scart to TV

That's it, all the inputs & outputs.
How to I get sound out of the bloody surround system instead those awful tinny built in tv speakers? Beats me how anyone can enjoy watching ANYTHING without at least 5.1.

So geeks & boffins, best/easiest & cheapest way to do it?

cheers,
GAZ

I'm no expert and without pictures and/or model numbers of the equipment, it's like trying to see what a cake will look like with just the ingredients.
That said, it's not a million miles away from my own set up. My PS4 goes to my monitor via HDMI carrying sound and image. I then have an optical out on my monitor which goes to my soundbar.

If you want to keep the sound signal digital, you'll need to upgrade your surround. Anything with Optical In will work. Personally, I would trawl Facebook, Shpock, Gumtree etc. for a second hand one and put in a cheeky low-ball offer.

You can get an optical to RCA adaptor for a few quid. I've never used this and I imagine that it sounds like shit, but it's an option: https://www.ebay.co.uk/bhp/optical-to-rca

There may be a much simpler way (again, not an expert) but I don't know what the ( )black. Pr ( )Red means.

Scart cable?

You need to let go, I've not used a start in over 10 years.

Get a Z5500 set for the bedroom.

Move the decent Denon downstairs.

HDMI includes audio, that means you need to find a way of getting the audio out of the TV and into the surround sound system, or alternatively get a direct audio out on whatever box is going into the TV.

Forget scart, forget RGB, forget component, forget composite. HDMI is the way things have been going, and the way things are. We need to embrace it.

Optical out of any box into a surround sound system will get the best audio quality, but not everything has an optical out, and it limits you to one input box at a time.

Personally I'd be looking at ways to get the sound out of the TV into the surround sound system so that I don't need to mess about with multi amp inputs and switching boxes. But that's just me.

Cheapest way would be to buy somethign this.

https://www.amazon.co.uk/Mountain-Digital-Optical-Analogue-Converter/dp/B0074JZ8ZW

TV - Optical - Converter - RCA - Surround.

Although I'd be inclined to buy a new surround.

Recently tried one (two actually) and they didn't work*, my issue was my soundbar turns off (after about 20 mins) when connected via RCA/phono, it doesn't via optical but my TV doesn't have a digital out.

*might have been a bad batch or something

Not sure I'm seeing the problem (pictures would help). Run a cable from the telly's subwoofer out to the white/red audio in?

Hi,
thanks for reply, plenty for me the think about, but remember I'm of an age where change is BAD lol (jk)
I just need to learn.
My TV DOES have an Optical out socket, but what should I connect it to?
( Providing I can buy the correct cable)
But reading the rest of your post, this isn't exactly easy or suitable, am I right?
Thinking

cheers,

Read my post and you'll see that it is easy and it is suitable. You just need an optical cable (dime a dozen) and some kind of speaker system with an optical input.

That happened to me too. I have a Sony something or other. It was a hand-me-down. That's why I ran everything through the monitor via HDMI, before outputting to the soundbar digitally.
Now I only have to turn it on once a day, rather than every time there's 15 minutes of no sound activity.

Any idea why they do that? Seems like a useless and infuriating feature.

Not a clue. Everyone I've mentioned it to said that there must be (not definitely is) a remote code to turn it off. But I'm damned if I can find it.
It's just about the most useless idea I've come across. A few hours, fine. But minutes? Well, if I paid anything I would have taken it for a refund.

Hmm just had a search online and found a firmware update for mine (I would never have guessed). Seems to have done the trick Thumbs Up

Hi,
I misread your post.
I thought you meant use Optical out on TV to existing surround system.
My bad.
Sounds like I'd be better off using my Denon DVR, but it seems a bit overkill (& its f*cking huge) so I'll look around for a new, half decent, small surround system.

How old is the TV?

Do any of the HDMI ports on it have ARC written on them?

Hi all,
Decided I'd better ditch the old surround system, though it seems a shame when its perfectly useable & sound quality was half decent (my mother is about 80% deaf so it was good for turning up loud with no noticeable difference in sound quality)
Decided on a soundbar, no wires, blends in with TV etc, bet it doesn't sound anywhere near as good as my 5 wee speakers & big subwoofer box Sad

Keeping the Denon dvr for its original purpose, listening to vinyl on the Dual turntable Cool

Thanks for all the advice,
cheers,

I gave up my 5.1 surround sound about 3 years ago when the living room was decorated.

The carpet fitter couldn't hide the speaker wire, so I got a sound bar.

Months later I told a mate, who simply said Why didn't you get flat speaker wire. Dohhhhhhh

But I rarely turned the surround on, whereas the sound bar is always on, I have optical out on the tv so I don't need to do anything and the sound bar works with the tv remote.

I do miss 5.1, when for example a rear door opened and the dog then went searching the house and films such as saving private Ryan, everyone who had 5.1 surround 15 years ago had that film.

Welcome to progress.

My 5.1 comes on and off with all my devices (fire stick, tv, kodi box, chrome cast, amazon dot) I dont need to do anything apart from turn the end devices on it autodectects the rest and changes source. Same as your sound bar it works through the TV remote on optical out from the tv. It had to be simple or it would not pass the misses test Smile

When I last decorated I ran all the cables under the floorboards, up the walls and put hidden terminals in the walls/skirting. You can only see two of the speakers but most people don't notice them and ask where the music is coming from and how it sounds so good Very Happy mo

It took some effort but I think it was worth while... I am looking at soundbars for other TV's in the house though, its like TV manufactures are starting to expect that you will be ok with having to upgrade shitty sound that comes out of the TV's as standard.

Hi all,
Why didn't anyone recommend using a 3.5mm headphone Jack, plugged into tv, with 2 phono plugs at other end, plugged into surround system?
Done this along with plugging subwoofer straight into back of telly (it has a dedicated subwoofer output socket)
Took me 20mins of rummaging through my big box of random cables & now I have fairly decent sound Smile & it cost me nothing Cool
Call yourselves geeks Rolling Eyes
