Weight is the enemy and must be exterminated at all cost.

There's a 1989 fastest ever 2wd hatchback I can think of that did 0-60 in 6.7seconds, on just 152bhp. 200bhp makes them super car destroyers when your rocking just 960kg kerb weight.

You've driven modern hot hatches, right?

Torsional Structural Rigidity in modern hot hatches is phenomenal compared to just 10 years ago; comparing it to the bean tins you're talking about is just off the scale.

Yeah, a new hot hatch might weigh more than an old one, but believe me even with 250bhp and a 960kg kerb weight you'd not be catching anything modern unless it's in a dead straight line on a rolling start.

'Fun' maybe you could argue, but modern equipment would absolutely beast that of the past. My 16 year old 911 wouldn't keep up with a modern Focus ST in the real world, let alone something a bit tastier like an RS, Civic Type R etc.

this is kinda true tbh. had a VXR smoke me a few years ago, then again he must have had something under the bonnet as my scoob will do 0-60 in 4 seconds

I've driven a few 2.0 Subarus in n/a, wrx, and sti format, and found the grip a revelation, and how long they hang on with some composure. The steering felt pretty dead and lifeless on most though, and they understeer a little bit close to the limit too I'd say.

0-60mph is a different ball game though even a 208bhp classic turbo will obliterate my Rover 220 0-60mph time as you gain more time from the launch than you lose through the massive transmission losses.

I've been told that if you floor a fwd car at say 70-100mph the 4wd cars like Lancers, and Impreza's often dissappear backwards?

Arry, I've driven all the greats of the Hot hatch/coupe world, Metro's, Astray GTE's, RST Escorts, Rover 220's, Calibra V6, a few Alfa's and a Mitsubishi GT0, Almera Gti, oh and a 4wheel steer Prelude too. Laughing

What is this torsional rigidity you speak about though? Confused

I take it that these new Audi, Megane, Focus and Golf machines etc, don't spin the steering wheel lock to lock from every green traffic light?
