Well I did something I never thought I'd do. I bought a friend. And I'm glad I did!

Meet Boomer:

Boomer is now my friend. We've had him nearly two weeks and he's nearly 10 weeks old. He's a Labrador x Italian Spinone and he's awesome. He likes his bed:

And is quite cosy in his safe place under the kitchen table (we are really trying to not have a cage and so far there's no need touch wood!)

He hasnt once cried at night, and he's getting there with house training. He knows his name, comes when called and can sit when told. I think him and little man will be good friends:

Perhaps a pointless post, but some people on BCF like doggies.

Cheers!

Very nice. Mr. Green

Cage Crate training is a good thing as it means the cage crate will always be his space and it's a lot more versatile than under the kitchen table.

We need 10x of these threads, everytime someone says show us your cat on here.

He looks like a sound little geezer, and an all black colour scheme is nice for a dog too.

Not keen on patchy multi coloured versions of dogs or cats, as you wouldn't buy a tortoise shell colour car or bike, so theres no need for an animal to look like it's made of lots of bits of different models all cut and shut together. Laughing

Oh an I'm so hoping that one day I'll be the first person on BCF to respond to a show us your eagle thread.

Nice looking doggie and the best colour too. Wink Black ones are always faster. Laughing
My Gracie wasn't much bigger than that when we got her in January. She's over 5 stone now at 10 months old,
with another 8 months of growing still to do. Shocked and already obviously bigger than any adult female Doberman or
Weimeraner we've encountered on our travels. We're just coming round to the idea of buying another dog in the next
few months to be her exercise pal as she's a freaking machine and wants to run ALL DAY if we'd let her. I'll post a few
pics once I've moved them onto Imgur. Thumbs Up Enjoy the next few months, make sure you take lots of pics and vids
as they aren't puppies for long, I struggle to call Gracie a pup any more as she's bloody huge. Laughing
I heartily recommend getting the dog to some proper dog training classes, it's so good for them and in the
long run you'll get a much easier to manage animal. Oh and unless you want a problem with it nicking shoes,
I'd take the ladies shoe away from the pup and replace with a squeaky toy asap. They can't differenciate between
shoes they can eat and shoes they can't. To them they all smell of feet and are fair game.

Thanks for the kind comments guys - he's a lovely little thing! Some good advice here too, its our first dog so advice is greatly appreciated!

We will definitely be attending training classes once he has his last injections (gets them on Monday) so he can go for walks etc a week after then thank god, as he is starting to get cabin fever!

The shoes - again good advice and hadnt thought of it! He's gone off them a bit now actually (maybe the smell of the wife's feet?!) and did have a fancy for my slippers (especially when my feet were in them) but again he's gone off them a bit.

Dog crate - again a good point made and it might not be such a bad idea after all! Do you leave the door open at night/when you leave? He's had the freedom of the kitchen since he's been home and has been fine with it, so if we got a crate would we be ok leaving the door open?

Boomer is starting to find his voice and confidence Very Happy definitely cant wait to get him out and about to burn off steam now. He's a bit snacky when excited (like all pups are) so we're now training that out of him - you can actually see him sit and think about what he's done Laughing

I'll be getting lots of pictures and videos for the thread Thumbs Up feel free to show your dogs (and eagles?!) off in here!

Grr666 - I cant believe the speed Gracie is growing - going to be a big girl indeed!

I've never found the need for a crate. As long as the dog has it's own space to retire to where anyone (kids especially) knows the dog isn't to be bothered while there, all should be ok. That said, nothing wrong with crates as long as it doesn't get turned into a prison with the dog locked in there.

Another idea would be to do as we've done and get an extra tall babygate and 'crate' him in the kitchen.
We bought a standard height one first and she was able to jump over that without a run up by the time she
was 5 months old. Laughing My girl gets the whole kitchen to herself at night and being tiled any incidents are
easily cleaned up. She is completely happy alone down there at night, that's her sofa in the pics so she sleeps on that.

Crates are horrible, we used a garden pen 6x4 roughley in our kitchen with a little house and teddys andblankets till Harvey got older but only at night and when we were out, then the kitchen for a bit with baby gate, and when he could safely use the stairs he had free run of the house.
Hes 3 now and sleeps wherever hes comfy, sometimes on the bed or floor or couch or landing lol, would never dream of putting him outside, hes family after all.

Leaving the crate door open only slightly defeats the point of it. Razz

Crates shouldn't "be horrible", something is very wrong if the crate is a horrible place!! Its meant to be the dogs own space and it's somewhere that if necessary you can leave the dog when you're out so that you know there's no chance of the dog doing something to get itself into trouble.

It should be somewhere that the dog likes.

Start all of this whilst the dog is a puppy and it'll be very easy.

Definitely something to think about - thanks Smile

Whilst I'm hunting for advice - anyone have any tricks for getting rid of his snacking/teething?

Its purely a playful/excited thing (he doesn't just do it randomly when being stroked etc), and I'm sure he'll grow out of it, but we'd like to reduce it as quick as possible. He has teething toys etc but would be good to hear of any training tips!

Make puppy squeaking noises if he gets over enthusiastic when playing as that's the noise he already knows means stop doing whatever he's doing.

To go further than that, to address any unwanted behaviour, be it using your hands and feet for teething, jumping up, bothering you when you're eating, or anything else at all, completely withdraw all attention. Literally turn your back on him and when he starts behaving sensibly again and you lavish attention on him. He'll very quickly catch onto the fact that if he's being a dick then his people aren't interested in him.

Plastic bottles are good for him to chew up when teething but you have got quite a few more weeks of him using you as a pin cushion. Laughing

Playing with grown up dogs will help him learn bite inhibition as they'll put him in his place

Thanks Thumbs Up That's a good help although I'm going to have to YouTube puppy squeaking noises Laughing

Will give that and the lack of attention a go for sure.

He's been introduced to my wife's grandparents dog (Jake) who has sufficiently put him in his place a couple of times, and now that Jake has finally stopped ignoring him, they're getting on great!

Nice to see I'm not the only one who made that jump.
Picked this guy up from the shelter, just before I left for the BBQ:

Don't worry - he was with my wife and sprog all weekend, so wasn't left alone at any point.

I make mine pick up a toy before those sorts of playtimes. No toy, no tussling. They have to bite it's how they
explore the world, particularly when young. Gracie was very mouthy for a while before we made her 'go find a toy,'
It's a strong Weimeraner trait apparently. The Doberman side of her however is hugely intelligent so she's quite
easy to train if you work with her at the right time. Now we've got her to the point where you can name the toy you
want her to bring and she'll go find that specific toy. With Gracie, the best time to teach her new stuff is when she's being
an into-everything, whinging, right royal pain right in the arsehole, usually exactly when you could do without the headache
and are trying to get something else done. BUT if you stop and use that time trying to teach her a new skill, she's a
very quick learner. And the biggest advice I can offer right now is socialise, socialise, socialise. With everything,
cars, the hoover, powertools, the home cinema system, parks, people, noisy playing kids, dogs, other wildlife pretty
much everything that sounds, looks or smells different to what they have already become familiar with.

Actually, since this has taken a turn for the 'how to train your dog' thread, I have a question.
My dog (Carlos) is terrified of vans. Just seeing a van with open doors will make him try to run away so hard that he's effectively throttling himself with a chest harness. He's a rescue dog, so I'm guessing that there's some kind of horrible story associated with his fear of them.
This isn't quite so strong with cars, but he still really really doesn't like them - what can I do to convince him that they're not the bringer of bad times? Is it just a case of carry him into the car until he stops panicking about it?

Gracie used to travel in the cab of my sprinter, when I changed vans she wasn't at all happy for a while about being put
in the back of the newer smaller van. So I picked her up, climbed in with her and we played (super bouncy) ball inside
the back of the van for about 20 minutes with the doors closed then I let her out again without a journey. It's about
the dog associating vans with good times. We did this a few times before I tried driving her anywhere in the back.
I should add it took ages to get her to jump up into the cab of the Sprinter without it all being a bit of a faff.
So I knew already that putting her in the back wasn't going to be straightforward.

For some dogs feeding them inside van/car could be enough but my Grace values play over food every time so a bit of ball
was the key. To get her to jump in by her own accord, I simply lobbed a ball in the back with the command 'up up'
said clearly as she jumped in each time. After a dozen or so tries with the ball we removed the ball but kept the
command. Now 'up up' is sufficient and she jumps in, and to fine tune it more and make a sequence of tasks
getting into the van in addition I say 'turn' and she turns round, 'sit' and she sits while I take her harness
off, then 'wait' (in the sit) while I close the van doors. Yesterday she spent over 5 hours in the van in total
and was asleep for most of it. She has her van toys so she doesn't get bored while in transit to wherever we're
going if she can keep her eyes open. This last week we've done a 1000 odd miles with the dog in the van and she's been
an absolute treat. There was a time when a 5 minute ride would see her whining and howling the whole time, it's
just a question of re labelling what vans/cars mean to your dog.

Gracie has now figured that we always end up somewhere pretty doggytastic when we all get in the van so
she is pretty enthusiastic about it all now. Here's one from last week on one such excursion where she found
herself on the beach at Hengistbury Head. Sun
