Just picked up one of these from Tesco for £3.

Anyone had any experience with them or found a way to charge them up?

£3 doesn't seem too bad for an emergency situation and is easier than carring a power bank. Might leave it under the seat on my bike.

I've found that a fair few pubs and the like in touristy places will charge phones.
Not a lot of help when you're wild camping in deepest darkest Walesland.

I saw a gadget on teh net that took a small 9v battery and charged your phone from that.
If I can find it, I will link, however don't hold your breath as it was a fair while back.

EDIT : Couldn't find it, however I did find this

The ones in the OP are probably a primary cell so can't be recharged ( once used I'd be tempted to crack it open to see if I could fit a new battery). They are better than rechargeable packs in true emergency situations as they can sit around for years and still work, whereas a power bank is more generally useful but needs to be charged regularly.
I used to use an adaptor that took AA batteries - same long shelf life, but can be replenished at any shop anywhere.

For the bike I just have a charger connected to the bike battery. I'd be pretty unlucky to have an emergency where my phone is flat and the bike battery is dead

inb4.. Wink

I'll take it apart once spent and see what it looks like inside. I do have one of those little power banks, as I got it free with something (vodafone?) but I never remember to keep it charged.. Rolling Eyes

I used an AA powered charger with an iPhone 5, they gave me 15% charge and the batteries got too hot to touch. Enough to get you out of the shit, but not really there for general use.

I'd like to know what the actual output of these are, is it two hours of frugal phone usage or two hours of a steady 5V output?

Looks pants. If it's going under the bike seat why not just wire in a 12v or USB socket and keep a charge cable under there?

Useful in emergency. But i carry 2 small power banks which were 8 quid each. Charging these before a trip would be easy to remember for me!

Doesn't look a bad idea at that price if you're really short on space and can't carry a power-pack.

Would be interested to know how fast it charges and whether its stays juiced sat under a bike seat in cold weather for a few months though.

Big Clive says: rechargeable 600mAh lithium-ion cell, you can recharge if you want to disassemble and wire it up manually to a suitable ~4V source - no protection circuitry though.

"Ecomental disaster".

I bought a Varta power bank for £20 on Ebay. It's enough to charge my phone about 6 times over. I rarely need to charge it, and I use it while travelling. It's pretty bulky but it does the job. I also have a 12V socket on my bike with a Belkin mini USB car charger which also does the job.

Remember kids, bikes aren't like lego. You can't easily take a part from one bike and then fit it to another.
