Hi guys,

GS500 still being a shit. I have quite an optimistic amount of tyre squaring to do over the coming week (about 570 miles) without much chance for mechanical sympathy, and would like to improve it before leaving (Weds).

Problems-

- Bike will die whenever you come to a stop, without fail, unless the throttle is revved.
- Pulling in the clutch at low speed kills the engine, restarting when clutch released.
- After it dies, it is not easy to restart, and can often take up to two minutes of fiddling with the choke to get it started (much to the delight of people in the traffic light queue)
- Raising idle speed does improve the problem, ie I don't need to hold revs on, however the bike races like choke is on once it warms up some more... leading to dangerous experiences at junctions etc.
- Seems to be consuming oil, a rate of half/litre per 500 miles. No obvious leaks, and also no obvious smoke from engine... Possibly coming out of airbox or front sprocket shaft, but probably running like a 2 stroke and consuming it slowly.

- Robby (and many other smart people) fiddled with it at length at the BBQ.
- Carb cleaned thoroughly, balanced, vacuum tubes checked, carb inlets/outlets checked fairly thoroughly I think (certainly discussed, but could still be a problem as rubbers are shite).

- Spark plugs and air filter are new, helped symptoms in the past to replace them, but still struggling.

Any other ideas what to check up?

- Valve clearances haven't been checked, but most people don't think thats the problem. They're on my to-do list, honest.

- Poor contact between HT cap and plug?

- Points a bit oxidised from having no cover on (the GS "suzuki" cap problem, now fixed but open for a long time before)?

Concerned that valves may be tight...

Tight valves will give hard starts, running hot, backfires and stalling at idle.
